Abstract
This
is
a
study
about
the
famous
Mexican
writer
,
Sor
Juana
de
la
Cruz
who
lived
in the
17th
Century
.
My
study
presents
her
life
through
an
analysis
of
two
of her
main
literary
works
:
First
Dream
and The
Answer
to
Sister
Filotea
. These
works
help
to
clarify
and
establish
the
nature
of
Sor
Juana
De
La
Cruz‘s
passionate
personality
,
character
, and
temperament
. The
study
helps
to
solidly
frame
an
understanding
of the
evolution
of her
educational
process
and
reflection
of her
innermost
being
. The
first
chapter
examines
Sor
Juana
as a
remarkably
talented
woman
who
was
completely
self-educated
and
became
a
master
of
many
diverse
academic
disciples
and
lived
most
of her
life
as a
nun
. She
became
famous
because
of her
extensive
knowledge
of
Latin
,
Greek
,
Theology
,
Science
,
Writing
, and
Music
. Her
fame
spread
throughout
the
Spanish
colonies
as
well
as to
Spain
. Her
contemporaries
called
her the
―"Tenth
Muse
" and the "
Phoenix
of
Mexico
".
Presently
, she
is
considered
to be
one
of the
great
authors
of the
Golden
Age
of
Spanish
literature
. The
information
is
presented
through
her
most
important
literary
work
―"the
Answer
to
Sister
Filotea
",
which
is
considered
to be the
most
authentic
of her
biographies
. The
second
chapter
displays
an
analysis
of her
famous
poem
,
―"First
Dream
". This
work
is
considered
to be
one
of the
most
important
philosophical
poems
written
in
Spanish
.
According
to her
words
, she
wrote
this
poem
for her
own
satisfaction
in
which
she
reveals
her
inner
struggle
. She
describes
how her
soul
was in
so
much
agony
that
it
strove
to
reach
out
of the
confines
of her
body
to
search
for
knowledge
.
