The
purpose
of this
study
was to
assess
the
accessibility
of
fitness
centers
and
health
clubs
in
Kuwait
with
respect
to
persons
with
disabilities
.
Data
were
collected
via
two
methods
:
Accessibility
Instruments
Measuring
Fitness
and
Recreation
Environments
(AIMFREE)
(n
=
12)
, and
personal
interviews
with
club
and
center
managers
(n
=
6)
.
AIMFREE
analysis
examined
the
relationship
between
accessibility
in
12
health
clubs
and
fitness
centers
in
Kuwait
and
annual
membership
price
in those
clubs
.
Analysis
found
that
expensive
health
clubs
examined
received
a
49%
average
accessibility
percentile
based
on the
AIMFREE
scale
.
Moderate
health
clubs
received
a
23%
average
accessibility
percentile
score
on the
AIMFREE
scale
, and
inexpensive
health
clubs
received
a
0%
average
accessibility
percentile
score
.
Furthermore
,
all
twelve
health
clubs
examined
achieved
a
low
overall
average
score
of
accessibility
according
to the
AIMFREE
scale
.
Grounded
theory
analysis
of
qualitative
data
obtained
from
personal
interviews
conducted
with
6
health
club
and
fitness
center
managers
identified
four
themes
:
manager
perceptions
,
laws
and
accessibility
,
accessibility
perceptions
,
attitudes
vs
.
accessibility
campaign
.
Health
club
managers’
agreed
on the
importance
of
physical
activity
for
persons
with
disabilities
.
Participants
commonly
identified
the
lack
of
implementation
and
regulation
of the
accessibility
law
as a
barrier
to
accessibility
in
Kuwait’s
health
clubs
. Their
attitudes
were
consistent
about
the
need
for
improved
accessibility
to
fitness
centers
and
health
clubs
. They
reacted
positively
to
Kuwait’s
movement
to
create
a
better
environment
for the
disabled
community
