Notes	Autism has many definitions, but its most specific definition describes it as a developmental disorder that affects verbal and non-verbal communication as well as social interaction. It affects a person’s ability to respond appropriately to their environment and educational delays are evident. The word epidemic has been linked to Autism and I would like to research this topic to truly find out how children develop after being diagnosed with Autism. In 2003 the autism spectrum disorder affected 1 in 250 births and recently this number has increased to 1 in 150 births. Previous mis-diagnosis, misinterpretation of results in the past, or the increase in Autistic awareness in parents and teachers, may have created this increase, but Autism diagnoses are ultimately more prevalent today than they were 15 years ago (Johnson, Johnson &Vladescu 2008). Accurate assessment can also be a consideration for the dramatic increase in diagnoses. School psychologists and trained special education teachers are now monitoring students in the classroom and supporting regular education teachers as well. Current research indicates that if parents watch for signs of Autism earlier in their child’s life, they may receive an early diagnosis and ultimately obtain services and interventions that will help in their future development. Watching for the early signs and paying attention to children’s progress and milestones are critical for diagnosis and recognizing a child’s learning strengths and weaknesses as early as 8 months of age can build a foundation for success (Siegel, 2008). The key aspects of this study are to: broaden my understanding of what autism is, expand professional knowledge of the levels of the autism spectrum, observe several young children in an educational as well as a home setting, research the variety of treatment and intervention techniques that assist in a child’s early development, interview families and teachers with autistic children to gain insight into their daily routines, and to develop a sense of awareness of this disability and how it has become a prevalent disorder and research the truths and myths behind its diagnosis. Mainly, with the completion of Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, I would like to gain the knowledge of the link between early childhood development and how early education and intervention affects the outcome of an autism diagnosis. I believe the learning process combines all knowledge, experiences, and ideals and when utilized correctly, true growth occurs. This is my intent with the completion of my thesis. My experience as a teacher, mother, and a cousin of a girl with autism has been inspirational and I want to bring what I have already learned as well as what I will learn over these next months of research, to truly grow as a person and educator of young children. The outcome of this research is based on whether the early intervention benefited the child and whether they are functioning more successfully than when they were first diagnosed or observed. All three children received early intervention that was beneficial to their learning and there was evidence of growth over a 4 month period of time in my observations completed at a home and school setting in Bristol and Avon Connecticut. Educators are teaching with the best interest of the child and parental support and communication is employed.
