Notes
The
purpose
of this
investigation
is
to
discuss
and
compare
the
effects
of
travel
on the
main
characters
in
two
Spanish
American
fictional
works
:
Los
pasos
perdidos
by
Alejo
Carpentier
and
La
vorágine
by
José
Eustasio
Rivera
.
Utilizing
the
theories
and
literary
criticisms
of
non-fictional
travel
literature
,
I
analyze
the
areas
in
which
the
protagonists
of
Los
pasos
perdidos
(the
musician)
and
La
vorágine
(Arturo
Cova)
undergo
a
change
by
comparing
their
characteristics
,
beliefs
, and
actions
before
and
after
their
travels
.
Both
of these
characters
embark
on a
journey
to a
destination
that
differs
greatly
from their
departure
site
. The
musician
from
Los
pasos
perdidos
travels
from
New
York
City
to an
undisclosed
city
in
Spanish
America
, and from there
continues
on into the
jungle
.
Arturo
Cova
in
La
vorágine
travels
from
Bogotá
to the
plains
in
Casanare
, and then to the
Venezuelan
jungle
. The
travelers
are
confronted
with
foreign
surroundings
that
differ
in their
nature
,
people
, and
culture
from the
travelers‘
origin
,
which
create
feelings
of
isolation
and
loneliness
in them
because
they
come
to the
realization
that they will
always
remain
foreigners
or
―outsiders
. These
external
changes
cause
introspection
in
which
the
protagonists
evaluate
themselves
and their
actions
. In
general
, this
internal
evaluation
then
influences
the
musician
and
Arturo
Cova
to
change
their
ideas
,
convictions
, and
actions
.
However
, in
some
areas
the
protagonists
do
not
change
their
deeply
rooted
convictions
. The
areas
of
character
growth
and
development
as
well
as
character
stagnation
on
which
I
focus
are:
evaluating
personal
values
upon
confrontation
of the
new
environment
,
alcoholism
,
violence
,
masculinity
and
chauvinism
.
Overall
, the
musician
from
Los
pasos
perdidos
and
Arturo
Cova
progress
toward
self-realization
because
of their
travels
,
even
though
some
of their
traits
and
beliefs
do
not
evolve
.
