Title
Invading
its
meager

from
every
side
? :
historical
interpretations
of the
Israeli
War
of
Independence

Notes
For
decades
Israeli
historians
around
the
world
have
argued
that
Israel
won
its
war
of
independence
even
though
Israeli
forces
were at a
great
disadvantage
. They have
stated
that the
invading
Arab
forces
were
better
prepared
than the
Israelis
militarily
. This
view
has been
advocated
by
professional
and
popular
Israeli
and
Jewish
historians
.
Non-Jewish
historians
since
that
time
, as
well
as
new“revisionist”
historians
in
Israel
more
recently
, have
argued
a
different
viewpoint
;
claiming
that the
Israelis
were in a
more
advantageous
position
militarily
.
So
the
question
arises
,
did
Jews
around
the
world
purposely
misrepresent
history
and if
so
,
why
?
Many
historians
,
both
professional
and
popular
, have
written
histories
concerning
the
relative
strengths
of
both
sides
during
this
war
. But
few
have
tried
to
assess
why
the
Israeli
historical
viewpoint
on the
war
is
so
different
from the
viewpoint
of
others
throughout
the
world
. This
thesis
examines
the
difference
in the
way
the
military
strengths
of
both
sides
is
portrayed
by
historians
,
both
professional
and
popular
.
It
also
analyzes
what
Israelis
hope
to
gain
by
portraying
the
Israelis
as
weak
and
up
against
great
odds
.
Finally
, this
paper
discusses
the
impact
of these
historical
interpretations
on
continued
historical
controversies
, on how this
history
is
currently
being
taught
in
Israeli
schools
, and on
other
religious
groups
with
no
involvement
in the
war
. This
thesis
argues
that the
older
pro-Israeli
arguments
about
the
early
phase
of the
War
of
Independence
are
part
of a
historical
myth
that has been
used
frequently
for
political
purposes
. These
Israeli
historians
have
used
history
to
create
sympathy
for the
Israeli
cause
, to
justify
their
actions
, and
unify
their
people
. This
thesis
therefore
shows
how
important
the
use
of
history
can
be for
political
purposes
in the
past
and
present
day
.
