performance

Master's Thesis
Notes
The
physical
fitness
of the
United
States
populace
has been at the
forefront
of
public
discussion
especially
in
recent
times
given
the
noticeable
increase
in the
rates
of
obesity
and its'
related
diseases
.
Law
enforcement
officers
have not been an
exception
to this
general
trend
.
Death
rates
among
police
officers
for
cardiovascular
diseases
and
various
forms
of
cancers
induced
by a
lack
of
physical
fitness
have
increased
exponentially
over
the
last
two
decades
(Violanti
,
Vena
&
Petralia
,
1998)
. This
study
seeks
to
establish
how the
level
of
physical
fitness
transcends
to
law
enforcement
functions
particularly
in
areas
where
it
affects
job
performance
and
produces
physical
and
non-physical
outcomes
such
as
occupational
injuries
and
stress
. A
self-report
survey
containing
42
questions
was
administered
to
120
Connecticut
police
officers
,
60
from the
West
Hartford
Police
Department
and
60
from
Hartford
Police
Department
. The
officers
were
asked
about
their
physical
activities
and
duties
to
determine
whether
exercising
regularly
(at
least
three
times
weekly
for an
estimated
30
minutes
each
time)
would
reduce
stress
,
induce
higher
job
performance
such
as
higher
rates
of
arrests
,
lower
amounts
of
citizens
'
complaints
and
produce
an
overall
higher
job
satisfaction
. A
statistical
analysis
was
conducted
to
determine
the
average
weekly
exercise
rates
among
respondents
. In
addition
, a
correlational
analysis
of
job
performance
and
stress
and the
regularity
of
exercise
were
done
to
establish
if
police
officers
who
exercised
regularly
had
higher
levels
of
job
satisfaction
and
lower
levels
of
stress
.
