there a

?

Notes
Racial
identity
has been
associated
with
various
facets
of the
lives
of
Blacks
.
Previous
studies
have
associated
African
Americans’
racial
identity
with the
development
of
self-esteem
,
psychopathology
and
academic
achievement
amongst
other
variables
. The
purpose
of the
present
study
was to
examine
two
theories
developed
to
examine
racial
identity
in
Blacks
;
Cross’
(1971
,
1978)
model
and
Baldwin’s
(1981
,
1984)
theory
. In
addition
, this
study
explored
Cultural
differences
between
Continental
Africans
,
African
Americans
and
African
Caribbean
people
. There were
221
respondents
between
the
ages
of
16-64
comprising
of
Continental
Africans
,
African
Americans
and
African
Caribbean
people
. They were
administered
tests
such
as the
Racial
Identity
Attitude
Scale
, the
African
Self-Consciousness
Scale
,
Beck’s
Hopelessness
Scale
,
Rosenberg’s
Self
Esteem
Scale
, the
Symptom
Checklist-90
Revised
and
demographic
data
. The
results
indicated
a
significant
correlation
coefficient
between
psychopathology
and the
stages
of
racial
identity
;
Preencounter
,
Encounter
and
Immersion-emersion
.
Internalization
attitudes
were
associated
with
hopelessness
.
Lower
levels
of
African
Self-Consciousness
were also
significantly
related
to
anxiety
,
hostility
and
phobic
anxiety
amongst
all
groups
.
Factor
analysis
of the
ASC
yielded
two
factors
:
value
for
Africentric
beliefs
and
value
for
Group
identification
. There was a
negative
significant
relationship
between
Group
identification
and
psychopathology
.
Africentric
values
were also
positively
related
to
psychopathology
.
Cultural
differences
between
the
groups
indicated
that
Africans
had
more
Encounter
and
Immersion-Emersions
attitudes
as
compared
to the
other
two
groups
.
Furthermore
,
African
Americans
had the
highest
levels
of
African
Self-Consciousness
.
Implications
from these
findings
suggest
that
racial
identity
plays
an
important
role
in the
mental
health
of
people
of
African
descent
.
