Title
The
Euro--a
changing
currency
in a
changing
world
: how
long
will this
currency
survive
?
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2009
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
introduction
of the
Euro
on
1
January
2002
created
a
new
element
of
uniformity
and
extended
the
capabilities
of the
European
Union
.
Through
a
lengthy
process
of
trials
,
failures
, and
breakthroughs
,
which
spanned
from the
European
Union’s
conception
, the
Euro
has
become
a
symbol
of
economic
viability
and
vitality
in an
ever-changing
world
market
. The
Euro
is
in its
infancy
compared
to
other
currencies
because
the
research
concerning
successes
and
failures
of the
Euro
has been a
relatively
new
phenomenon
.
However
, this
research
will be
imperative
to
forming
conclusions
about
the
survival
of this
influential
emerging
currency
. A
compilation
of
economically
diverse
European
member
States
use
the
Euro
and
make
it
especially
difficult
to
determine
the
full
extent
of its
consequences
. This
maiden
attempt
at
economic
unification
of the
European
continent
on a
large
scale
will
show
whether
or not this
is
possible
for
other
places
in the
world
.
National
prerogatives
sometimes
prevail
over
the
distribution
of
benefits
among
all
states
when
so
many
countries
have an
invested
interest
in the
Euro
. The
winners
and
losers
of the
European
Union
and the
usage
of the
Euro
are
seen
in
globalized
industries
like
the
telecommunications
industry
in
France
and
wine
production
and
exportation
throughout
the
European
Union
. There
is
early
evidence
that
suggests
that
some
countries
and
industries
will
experience
setbacks
while
other
will
thrive
.
Even
though
the
Euro
has been
gaining
strength
in
recent
years
,
England
,
Sweden
, and
Denmark
have not
joined
as of this
date
because
those
nations
feel
subscription
to the
Euro
will
jeopardize
national
control
of their
economies
. This
controversy
creates
some
resentment
around
the
European
Union
which
undermines
the
effectiveness
of the
Euro
as a
single
currency
. The
new
European
Union
members
have been
transitioning
to
Euro
as
it
continues
to
gain
strength
. The
success
of
new
member
States
joining
is
dependent
on
many
economic
factors
.
Since
much
research
is
still
being
written
and
studied
,
rapidly
changing
events
in
our
globalized
economy
and their
impact
on the
Euro
are
best
chronicled
in the
daily
publications
throughout
Europe
. This
thesis
also
aims
to
indicate
disparity
within
the
European
Union
and how
it
is
evaluated
by the
media
.
Insufficient
or
no
information
can
be
gathered
to
account
for
impact
of the
recent
additions
or
future
additions
to the
Euro-Zone
. For
example
,
Slovakia
adopted
the
Euro
as its
currency
effective
1
January
2009
. The
advantages
and
disadvantages
of their
transition
are
only
beginning
to be
documented
via
economic
reports
,
news
publications
, and
statistical
information
. The
Euro’s
success
depends
on the
collective
economic
growth
and
cooperation
of
member
states
. The
importance
of the
European
Union
and the
Euro
has
grown
during
a
time
where
world
markets
were
stable
, but
it
will
need
to
weather
current
and
future
economic
trends
in
order
to
prove
its
durability
.
Ultimately
,
my
research
will
support
the
hypothesis
that the
Euro
will
remain
a
stable
currency
in the
world
market
while
confronting
internal
divergence
. Also, if
recent
growth
trends
continue
, the
Euro
will
surpass
the
United
States
Dollar
as the
preferred
medium
of
exchange
worldwide
.
