Notes
The
Evolution
of the
Afrocolombian
Social
Movement
was
driven
by the
pressures
that
black
communities
face
daily
.
Colombia
is
a
multicultural
country
, but
it
was not
until
the
1991
Constitutional
reform
that this was
officially
recognized
. The
recognition
of the
Afrocolombians
as a
distinct
group
with their
own
cultural
background
was a
triumph
of the
social
movement
. But in the
political
power
structure
,
Afrocolombians
are
still
invisible
. The
country
is
ruled
solely
by
lighter
skinned
people
, or the
so
called
mestizos
. This
domination
is
a
result
of the
whitening
process
imposed
by the
Spanish
Crown
in
colonial
times
.
One
of the
tools
that the
Afrocolombian
Social
Movement
is
utilizing
in the
struggle
for
equal
rights
is
an
educational
process
called
etnoeducación
(ethnic-education)
. This
thesis
will
analyze
the
historical
background
of
African
descendents
in
Colombia
. What were their
primary
motivations
in
forming
a
social
movement
? And how has this
social
movement
changed
throughout
history
.
While
researching
this
evolution
,
I
discovered
that there
is
an
identity
crises
in the
black
community
linked
with the
whitening
process
. This
thesis
is
based
on a
literature
review
and
fifteen
days
of
field
research
in
Colombia
during
the
celebrations
of
Afrocolombian
week
in
May
2008
. There were also
interviews
with
scholars
,
students
, and
people
involved
with the
Afrocolombian
Social
Movement
. The
snow
ball
method
was
used
in
order
to
contact
the
interviewees
. The
Afrocolombian
Social
Movement
has
lost
its
momentum
due
to the
ramifications
of
having
too
many
separate
organizations
within
the
movement
. In
order
to
succeed
and to
gain
more
participation
in the
socio-political
arena
, the
social
movement
needs
to
unify
and to
work
harder
to
educate
Colombians
about
multiculturalism
and the
diversity
that the
country
possesses
.
