Notes
This
study
intends
to
focus
on the
ethnic
identity
and
media
consumption
of the
Korean
immigrants
. The
basic
stance
of the
thesis
is
that
identity
is
inherently
a
communication
process
, and
must
be
understood
as a
transaction
in
which
messages
are
exchanged
. There are
many
factors
that
influence
the
formation
of the
immigrants
'
cultural
identity
. The
influence
of
race
,
family
,
social
group
,
education
,
religion
and
various
factors
including
dominant
culture
can
be
numerated
.
Among
many
institutions
for
sustaining
the
cultural
identity
this
study
focuses
on the
influence
of
media
,
especially
the
ethnic
media
. For the
background
of the
study
several
things
were
consulted
. The
immigration
history
,
socio-economic
background
of
Korean
immigrants
,
geographical
dispersion
, the
family
influence
, the
influence
of
Korean
school
, the
strong
influence
of
Korean
Christian
church
,
business
style
of
Korean
immigrants
, and
Korean
media
were
consulted
.
Three
research
questions
were
raised
.
1
. What
kinds
of
ethnic
media
are
consumed
in the
Korean
immigrant
families
of this
area
?
2
.
Is
there any
difference
in the
consuming
pattern
of
media
among
family
members
and
differing
generations
?
3
. What
influence
do
Korean
media
have on
cultural
identity
of
family
members
?
According
to the
methodology
, this
study
is
based
on
qualitative
method
.
Participant
observation
and
interview
was
main
tool
for this
study
.
Unit
of
analysis
of this
study
was
family
.
7
families
living
in
Hartford
area
were
main
subjects
. And
two
families
were
added
for the
comparison
(2
families
living
in
MA
and
NJ)
.
9
families
were
described
. The
description
was
composed
of
three
parts
:
general
description
,
five
dimensions
of
acculturation
of the
family
and
research
questions
.
Without
relation
to the
staying
years
in the US,
9
families
sustained
a
certain
level
of
Korean
cultural
ethnicity
. This
finding
supports
the
adhesive
theory
of
acculturation
. But
all
the
family
seemed
to
live
marginalized
life
from
dominant
culture
group
.
According
to the
research
questions
, the
pattern
of
Korean
media
consumption
was
numerated
. The
Korean
satellite
TV
channels
were
hardly
watched
in this
area
.
Among
the
consumption
of the
media
, the
dependence
on the
Internet
was
conspicuous
. The
Internet
was
used
for
various
reasons
. They
retrieved
information
related
with the
homeland
using
the
Internet
. The
Internet
was also
used
for
entertaining
,
religious
reason
, and
forming
the
virtual
society
of
Korean
immigrants
. There was
clear
distinction
in
consumption
patterns
of the
ethnic
media
between
generations
.
Only
the
first
and
1.5
generation
consumed
Korean
media
voluntarily
.
It
was
hardly
found
that the
second
generation
consumed
the
Korean
media
voluntarily
until
they
reached
certain
age
.
Regarding
the
influence
of
Korean
media
on
cultural
identity
of
Korean
immigrants
,
it
could
not be
denied
that they had the
important
role
of
keeping
the
cultural
identity
of
first
and
1.5
generation
Koreans
. The
influence
of the
Korean
media
on the
second
generation
Koreans
remained
unknown
. This
study
has
limitations
of
generalization
. But
it
intended
to be a
stepping
stone
for
future
studies
related
with the
influence
of
ethnic
media
and the
cultural
identity
.
