Title
A
Comparative
Study
of
Identity
and
Self-Esteem
Amongst
Jamaican
and
Jamaican
American
Males
In
Hartford
,
Connecticut
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2005
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
study
determined
the
development
of
Jamaican
identity
among
male
individuals
living
in the
United
States
, but
born
in
Jamaica
and those
born
in the
United
States
with at
least
one
Jamaican
parent
. This
study
tested
the
hypothesis
that a
strong
Jamaican
identity
would
exhibit
a
high
level
of
self-esteem
.
Additionally
, this
study
established
whether
a
Jamaican
identity
while
maintained
while
in the
United
States
,
benefited
or
inhibited
the
self-esteem
of the
participants
.
Twenty
Jamaican
and
Jamaican
American
males
from
neighboring
West
Indian
restaurants
,
churches
, and
social
organizations
from
Hartford
,
Connecticut
participated
.
First
, the
participants
completed
a
Demographics
Questionnaire
. Then, they
filled
out
a
Jamaican
Identity
Questionnaire
,
where
they
rated
a
series
of
statements
, in
terms
of
agreement
,
which
determined
a
strength
or
weakness
in
identity
. The
Rosenberg
Self-Esteem
Scale
(1989)
measured
participants
'
levels
of
self-esteem
. This
part
of the
study
took
participants
approximately
ten
minutes
to
complete
.
Finally
,
ten
of the
subjects
completed
audio
taped
interviews
,
where
they
answered
a
series
of
questions
related
to their
development
of
identity
. The
interviews
took
approximately
two
hours
.
All
of the
information
gathered
during
the
study
determined
the
correlation
between
Jamaican
identity
and
self-esteem
. The
results
of the
study
supported
the
hypothesis
that a
strong
Jamaican
Identity
positively
correlated
with a
strong
level
of
self-esteem
.
Participants
scored
a
mean
of
31.5
out
of
40
on the
Jamaican
Identity
Questionnaire
. On The
Rosenberg
Self-Esteem
Scale
(1989)
participants
had a
mean
score
of
36.65
score
out
of
40
in
self-esteem
.
Both
scores
fell
in the
high
range
for
Jamaican
identity
and
self-esteem
.
Results
on the
Jamaican
Identity
Questionnaire
and The
Rosenberg
Self-Esteem
Scale
revealed
identities
that
maintained
high
levels
of
self-esteem
despite
the
impact
of
first
or
second
migration
to the
United
States
. The
interviews
also
supported
an
ability
to
maintain
one's
identity
and
self-esteem
, with
additional
insight
into
mechanisms
that
helped
to
alleviate
negative
feelings
that
occurred
when
encountering
certain
events
. The
need
for
further
study
of
gender
issues
and
other
ethnicities
in the
African
Diaspora
could
also
contribute
to a
better
understanding
of the
development
of
identities
that
could
enhance
levels
of
self-esteem
.
