Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
prove
that
La
fiesta
del
chivo
,
written
by
Mario
Vargas
Llosa
and
En
el
tiempo
de
las
mariposas
,
written
by
Julia
Alvarez
,
clearly
show
the
control
that
Rafael
Trujillo
Molina
held
over
the
Dominican
Republic
and its
people
throughout
his
thirty
one
years
as
dictator
of that
country
. This
presentation
has been
divided
into
four
parts
: the
history
of the
Dominican
Republic
during
the
dictatorship
of
Trujillo
, an
evaluation
of the
existing
literature
that
is
about
Latin-American
dictators
and
dictatorships
, and an
evaluation
of
each
of the
two
novels
,
La
fiesta
del
chivo
and
En
el
tiempo
de
las
mariposas
. The
first
section
of this
thesis
, that
is
the
section
about
Dominican
history
during
the
years
of the
Trujillo
dictatorship
,
begins
with a
description
of the
way
in
which
Trujillo
ascended
to the
position
of
dictator
, the
governmental
structure
during
the
dictatorship
, and the
types
of
control
that
Trujillo
employed
in
order
to
maintain
his
control
. These are
followed
by a
description
of
Trujillo's
personality
and the
effect
of his
personality
of the
Dominican
people
and the
country
in
general
.
Next
is
a
discussion
of the
international
relations
of the
Dominican
Republic
during
this
time
period
. The
section
is
concluded
with a
description
of the
subversive
movements
that
formed
during
the
Trujillo
dictatorship
and their
efforts
to
carry
out
a
coup
. The
second
section
of this
thesis
describes
the
progression
of
literature
beginning
with those
novels
written
about
Latin-American
dictatorships
and
ending
with those
written
about
Latin-American
dictators
. The
following
novels
have been
included
in this
evaluation
:
1)
Facundo
, by
Sarmiento
;
2)
Tirano
Banderas
, by
Valle-Inclan
;
3)
El
Seor
Presidente
, by
Asturias
; and
4)
La
fiesta
del
chivo
, by
Vargas
Llosa
and
En
el
tiempo
de
las
mariposas
by
Alvarez
. The
third
part
of this
thesis
is
an
evaluation
of
La
fiesta
del
chivo
, in
which
the
stories
of
Urania
,
Trujillo
, and the
revolutionaries
have been
analyzed
separately
. The
story
of
Urania
shows
the
way
in
which
the
politicians
within
the
Trujillo
government
were
victims
of the
whims
and
cruelty
of
Trujillo
.
Through
the
story
presented
by
Trujillo
himself
,
Vargas
Llosa
presents
an
accurate
portrayal
of
Trujillo's
personality
and the
way
in
which
he
reacted
to
opposing
forces
both
in and
outside
of the
country
. The
story
of the
revolutionaries
and their
reasons
for
participating
in the
assassination
of
Trujillo
serves
as a
way
to
present
the
atrocities
that
many
Dominicans
suffered
during
the
Trujillo
regime
. At the
end
of these
analyses
is
a
description
of the
treatment
of
women
that
is
included
in
all
three
stories
. That
description
is
compared
to the
treatment
of
women
during
that
time
period
as
portrayed
in
historical
documentation
. The
fourth
part
of this
thesis
, that
which
analyzes
the
novel
En
el
tiempo
de
las
mariposas
,
shows
that:
1)
Alvarez
truthfully
presents
the
control
that
Trujillo
had
over
the
general
population
and the
struggle
of the
Dominicans
to
free
themselves
from this
control
, and
2)
what
happened
in the
lives
of the
Mirabal
sisters
of this
novel
serves
as
excellent
example
of the
experiences
of the
general
population
during
Trujillo's
dictatorship
.
