Notes
Waterbury
,
Connecticut
is
known
as the
Brass
City
. To those
who
are
familiar
with
it
, they are also
aware
of its
profound
brass
history
. The
former
brass
factories
are
abandoned
or
serving
the
city
in
some
other
capacity
.
Herein
,
lay
the
problem
. There
is
a
vast
amount
of
information
regarding
Waterbury's
brass
history
, but
very
little
has been
done
since
its
demise
.
Essentially
,
now
that
brass
is
gone
–
what
type
of
city
is
Waterbury
today
?
Waterbury's
economy
was
rooted
in
manufacturing
.
Now
, that
brass
is
gone
there
needs
to be a
reexamination
of
Waterbury's
new
economy
, an
economy
that
is
now
rooted
in
service
rather
than
manufacturing
. Also, the
residents
who
witnessed
and
experienced
the
economic
transformation
have
changed
as
well
.
One
city
school
,
Crosby
High
School
,
is
a
great
barometer
of the
dynamic
change
that has
occurred
in the
Brass
City
. To
ascertain
pertinent
information
research
was
conducted
utilizing
both
print
and
electronic
information
.
Primary
and
secondary
sources
provided
sufficient
information
to
support
the
position
of this
paper
. Also,
extensive
research
was
done
with
census
material
from the
Connecticut
State
Library
. A
survey
was
administered
to
assess
a
group
of
student's
impressions
of the
city
and the
importance
of their
education
in
Waterbury's
new
economy
. The
research
indicated
above
proved
that
Waterbury's
economy
did
shift
from
manufacturing
to
service
. This
shift
has
impacted
the
current
residents
.
Specifically
,
it
has
placed
an
increased
importance
on
education
. The
research
contained
within
this
paper
should be
used
to
guide
good
educational
practices
that will
prepare
Waterbury's
students
for a
new
economy
.
