Notes
Driving
while
under
the
influence
of
intoxicating
beverages
has been a
pervasive
problem
both
in the
United
States
and
Europe
,
resulting
in
thousands
of
deaths
and
injuries
.
Considerable
research
has
identified
college
students
as
being
at
particularly
high
risk
for
drinking
and
driving
. The
present
study
examines
the
use
of
one
harm
reduction
strategy--a
designated
driver--by
college
students
at
four
campuses
of a
predominantly
commuter
university
.
Previous
studies
have
documented
that
college
students
are
aware
of the
designated
driver
concept
and
make
considerable
(but
inconsistent)
use
of this
practice
.
Based
on the
existing
literature
,
seven
research
questions
were
developed
that
examined
three
general
domains
:
(1)
the
need
for
designated
drivers
(how
do
students
get
to and from
drinking
venues)
,
(2)
the
selection
and
use
of
designated
drivers
, and
(3)
behavior
of
designated
drivers
.
Fourteen
hundred
students
from the
four
campuses
of the
Connecticut
State
University
(CSU)
system
served
as
subjects
in the
current
study
by
completing
a
health
survey
during
the
Fall
2004
and
Spring
2005
semesters
. This
survey
asked
about
a
number
of
issues
including
alcohol
and
drug
use
and the
use
of a
designated
driver
.
Our
analysis
indicated
that
while
a
majority
of
CSU
students
have
used
a
designated
driver
within
the
past
30
days
, this
use
was
inconsistent
.
Moreover
, the
use
of
designated
drivers
was
least
among
those
who
typically
drunk
the
most
.
Over
half
the
students
who
served
as
designated
drivers
consumed
some
alcohol
while
serving
in that
role
.
Overall
,
however
,
CSU
students
appear
to be
slightly
below
national
averages
in
terms
of their
likelihood
of
driving
while
under
the
influence
.
Limitations
of this
study
as
well
as
suggestions
for
future
research
are
included
.
