Notes
The
present
study
investigates
the
link
between
trait
anger
and
non-compliant
behavior
in
prison
. A
sample
of
inmates
from
three
prisons
in the
Connecticut
Department
of
Correction
were
studied
to
determine
if the
level
of their
trait
anger
would
predict
the
amount
of
Disciplinary
Reports
(DRs)
that were
given
to them. The
sample
was
comprised
of
both
men
and
women
, with an
age
range
of
19
to
53
, with the
average
age
being
33
years
old
. The
subjects
represented
several
racial
groups
(white
,
black
, and
hispanic)
and were
serving
prison
sentences
ranging
from
9
months
to
life
in
prison
. The
average
prison
sentence
among
participants
was
5.83
years
.
All
of the
participants
were
involved
in a
substance
abuse
treatment
group
. The
trait
anger
score
was
determined
by the
administration
of the
Trait
Anger
Scale
as the
inmates
were
beginning
the
treatment
program
.
Disciplinary
scores
(based
on the
number
of
DRs
received)
were then
correlated
with the
anger
scores
to
see
if a
link
exists
. Also, the
subjects
were
divided
,
based
on their
anger
score
, into
High
and
Low
Anger
groups
.
Independent
Samples
t-tests
were
done
to
determine
if
High
Anger
individuals
differ
from
Low
Anger
individuals
based
on their
anger
score
. This
study
did
not
find
a
link
to
relate
anger
to
non-compliant
behavior
.
More
work
,
including
increased
sample
size
and
limiting
the
time
frame
of
DR
analysis
,
needs
to be
completed
to
gain
a
more
comprehensive
look
at this
picture
.
