Title
Two
rivers
from the
same
rain
: the
ideology
of
José
Martí
in the
literature
of
Cubans
on the
island
and in
exile
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2009
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Jos
Mart
,
writer
,
poet
and
revolutionary
has been
given
various
names
, the
most
widely-used
of
which
are "The
Apostle
" and "The
Master/The
Teacher
" of
Cuban
freedom
. The
interpretation
of his
works
,
post-mortum
, has
resulted
in the
creation
of
various
beliefs
that
contradict
each
other
,
yet
claim
their
foundation
to be in
Jos
Mart's
ideas
.
Mart's
works
fundamentally
relate
to what
it
means
for a
country
or
nation
to be
free
and
self-sufficient
. This
study
demonstrates
how, with their
various
and
selective
interpretations
,
both
Cubans
in
exile
and
Cubans
on the
island
,
specifically
Fidel
Castro
, are
simultaneously
living
Mart's
greatest
dream
and his
worst
nightmare
. From an
outside
perspective
, with
no
political
motive
, this
study
notes
the
similarities
and
contradictions
within
the
ideologies
of
Jose
Marti
,
Fidel
Castro
and his
followers
, and
Cubans
in
exile
. This
study
examines
the
presence
of
Jos
Mart's
ideology
within
the
literature
of
Cuban
authors
on the
island
and in
exile
. The
proximity
of the
lives
of
Cubans
in
exile
and on the
island
to the
themes
of
interest
to
Mart
,
such
as
materialism
,
socialism
,
racism
,
democracy
,
freedom
,
nostalgia
and
political
prison
is
evaluated
through
the
character
descriptions
,
settings
,
plots
and
outright
references
that the
literature
makes
to
Marti
in
order
to
determine
if the
river
of
thought
for
either
of the
groups
has been
nourished
by the
rain
of
Mart's
ideology
. The
literature
included
in the
study
is
limited
to
works
that were
written
after
Fidel
Castro
came
to
power
in
Cuba
. The
writers
included
in the
study
are
Cubans
that
live
, or
lived
, in
exile
,
some
in the
United
States
,
others
in
Europe
and
others
that have
challenged
the
restrictions
and have
written
about
the
Cuban
reality
from the
island
. The
literature
indicates
that there
is
a
strong
correlation
between
the
topics
that were
relevant
in
Mart's
time
and those that are
relevant
currently
in
both
the
United
States
and
Cuba
.
Based
upon
the
literature
and its
comparison
to
Mart's
ideology
it
is
evident
that
neither
of the
two
groups
,
neither
the
Cubans
living
in
exile
in the
United
States
,
enjoying
and
perpetuating
a
materialistic
lifestyle
,
nor
Fidel
Castro
, his
brother
,
Ral
and his
followers
on the
island
have
created
rivers
that
flow
from the
rain
of
Mart
.
Perhaps
his
ideology
nourished
their
formation
, but
soon
after
their
creation
these
rivers
began
to be
nourished
by
another
source
.
