Notes
Determining
what
exactly
"
works
" as
far
as
rehabilitating
offenders
,
particularly
women
with
dual
diagnosis
(i.e.
,
mental
health
and
substance
abuse)
,
can
be a
difficult
task
.
Recent
research
has
turned
its
focus
to
looking
at the
effects
of
both
treatment
and
supervision
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
determine
whether
treatment-only
services
or
treatment
and
supervision
services
combined
were
more
effective
in
reducing
re-arrests
. The
study
examined
participants
'
opinions
of their
treatment
and/or
supervision
as
well
as
evaluated
recidivism
data
to
determine
which
form
of
rehabilitation
was
more
effective
.
I
expected
to
find
that
when
treatment
programs
were
combined
with
supervision
services
for an
offender
,
particularly
dual
diagnosis
offenders
, there would be
positive
reactions
and
lower
recidivism
. This
study
had a
sample
of
12
women
who
voluntarily
participated
in an
interview
.
Both
treatment-only
and
treatment
and
supervision
combined
were
found
to be
successful
in
regard
to
re-arrests
. The
recidivism
data
(3
month
follow-up)
had
encouraging
results
.
All
of the
women
interviewed
were in
some
way
accomplishing
goals
that they had
either
set
previously
or they were
moving
on to
new
goals
.
Almost
all
of the
women
had
completed
their
treatment
and/or
supervision
services
and
none
of the
women
became
re-arrested
in this
time
. The
findings
are
encouraging
regarding
the
potential
of
treatment
services
for
dual
diagnosis
female
offenders
.
