Abstract
In
1974
, the
island
of
Cyprus
underwent
a
drastic
geographical
change
that
separated
, by
force
, the
population
of the
island
.
Though
not
uneventful
, the
island's
history
has
shown
that for
centuries
,
both
Greek
and
Turkish
Cypriots
lived
together
. In
addition
,
geopolitical
ramifications
are
dire
as
countless
visitors
to
Cyprus
have
sought
to
control
the
island's
geographic
location
. A
stalemated
peace
process
and the
further
involvement
by the
United
Nations
,
European
Union
, and
other
supranational
bodies
have
resulted
in what
is
known
as the
‗Cyprus
Situation‘
. On the
small
island
live
both
Greek
and
Turkish
Cypriots
speaking
both
the
Greek
and
Turkish
languages
respectively
,
albeit
dialects
thereof
.
Additionally
,
Christianity
and
Islam
are the
two
communities‘
practiced
religions
.
However
,
due
to the
post-1974
line
of
demarcation
called
the
Green
Line
, the
two
groups
live
separate
from
each
other
.
Resulting
is
the
Greek
Christian
south
and
Turkish
north
,
hotly
contested
in
terms
of
legitimacy
, on the
same
island
.
Yet
,
consequently
,
remaining
are the
places
of
worship—i.e
.
mosques
and
churches—as
telltale
signs
of
both
the
younger
Cyprus
as
well
as its
modern
religious
landscape
. As the
thesis
closely
inspects
the
number
,
condition
, and
placement
of
religious
structures
in
North
Cyprus
,
it
is
apparent
that the
Turkish
, and
largely
Moslem
northern
territory
,
may
not be as
Islamic
as
expected
after
such
an
abrupt
geographical
alteration
of the
island
in
1974
. The
Cyprus
Situation
is
certainly
entangled
within
Greek
and,
even
more
so
,
Turkish
politics
. The
ethnic
and
religious
circumstances
of
Cyprus
will have a
paramount
influence
over
the
future
of
Turkey
and
foreign
relations
amidst
the
greater
Eastern
Mediterranean
region
in
general
.
