Title
The
Role
of
African
Women
in
Conflict
Resolution
: A
Case
Study
of the
Great
Lakes
Region
of
Africa
Publisher

Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In
Africa
, and
especially
the
Great
Lakes
region
of the
continent
,
conflict
between
groups
and
nations
has been on the
rise
for
some
time
. This has
led
to the
displacement
of
people
and
massive
loss
of
lives
and
property
. The
conflict
is
also a
major
setback
to
political
,
social
and
economic
development
of
countries
in the
Great
lakes
region
. The
impacts
of the
conflicts
have been
much
severe
on
women
and
children
and
yet
few
or
no
women
are
involved
the
peace-building
efforts
. This
study
therefore
,
sought
to
investigate
the
role
of
African
women
in
conflict
resolution
.
African
women
in
general
,
remain
an
immense
resource
that has
often
been
excluded
from
strategies
of
security
and
policy
formulation
. In
view
of the
fragile
stability
between
groups
and
countries
in the
region
, there
is
renewed
need
to
understand
the
challenges
that
women
face
and the
subtle
but
critical
roles
they
play
in
conflict
resolution
. A
good
understanding
of the
nature
and
characteristics
of
some
of the
numerous
challenges
women
face
will
provide
a
strong
foundation
on
which
future
peace
programs
and
policies
might
be
based
. As
part
of this
discussion
, a
literature
review
of
conflict
and
peace
efforts
in
Africa
was
analyzed
and a
survey
was
carried
out
. The
survey
which
was
administered
to
refugee
women
who
had
fled
from
conflicts
in the
region
and are
now
living
in the
United
States
of
America
,
included
multiple
choice
and
open-ended
questions
about
the
impact
of
war
on
women
and the
role
they
play
in
resolving
conflict
.
Findings
from this
study
revealed
that the
spiraling
nature
of
conflicts
in
Africa
has had
multiple
impacts
on
women
. What was
clear
in the
conclusion
of the
study
is
that the
experiences
and
skills
of
women
can
be
essential
in the
efforts
that are
being
made
to
bring
peace
to the
Great
Lakes
region
and
indeed
Africa
.
