Title
The
Relationship
between
Pathological
Gambling
and The
Big

Personality
Factors
Publisher

Date
2003
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Pathological
gambling
is
a
severe
,
crippling
,
epidemic
in
our
modern
society
.
Pathological
gambling
has been
linked
with a
host
of
personality
disorders
. The
present
study
will
examine
the
relationship
between
pathological
gambling
and the
Big
Five
dimensions
:
openness
,
conscientiousness
,
extraversion
,
agreeableness
, and
neuroticism
.
Positive
regression
coefficients
were
hypothesized
between
neuroticism
,
extraversion
, and
openness
.
Negative
regression
coefficients
were
hypothesized
between
SOGS
and
conscientiousness
and
agreeableness
.
One
hundred
and
thirteen
individuals
participated
in this
study
.
Fifty-
five
males
and
41
females
were
recruited
from
general
population
,
gambling
treatment
centers
, and
Gamblers
Anonymous
(GA)
meetings
. There were
74
individuals
from
general
population
and
39
from
gambling
treatment
centers
and
G
. A.
meetings
. The
participants
were
administered
the
South
Oaks
Gambling
Screen
(SOGS)
, the
NEO-FFI
, and
Goldberg's
Impulse
Control
Measure
.
Each
subject
was
given
thirty
to
forty-
five
minutes
to
complete
tests
, and
each
were
asked
to
sign
and
read
consent
forms
.
Correlations
demonstrated
significant
relationship
(p
<.05)
between
SOGS
and
dimensions
:
neuroticism
,
agreeableness
, and
conscientiousness
.
High
SOGS
scores
were
associated
with
high
scores
on
conscientiousness
and
agreeableness
. These
results
are
consistent
with
my
hypothesis
. The
main
hypotheses
were
tested
utilizing
multiple
regression
analyses
. The
SOGS
was the
outcome
variable
, and
predictors
were
five
factors
of the
NEO-FFI
.

Gambling
and
Personality
Positive
regression
coefficients
were
hypothesized
between
SOGS
and
neuroticism
,
extraversion
, and
openness
.
Negative
regression
coefficients
were
hypothesized
between
SOGS
and
conscientiousness
and
agreeableness
. The
only
coefficient
that was
significant
(p
<.05)
was for
agreeableness
,
however
extraversion
(p=.062)
and
conscientiousness
(p=.083)
were
close
to.05
level
.
Mean
differences
were also
explored
between
gambling
treatment
groups
,
general
population
, and
gender
. The
mean
scores
for the
SOGS
in
treatment
groups
were
15.33
, and
1.17
for the
general
population
. The
mean
scores
on
SOGS
were
6.78
for
males
and
4.59
for
females
.
Regression
results
provide
support
for
hypotheses
regarding
agreeableness
,
extraversion
, and
conscientiousness
.
Regression
results
did
not
support
the
hypothesis
about
neuroticism
,
however
correlation
results
are
significant
with
neuroticism
,
consistent
with
previous
research
exhibiting
a
relationship
with
impulse
control
,
which
is
a
facet
of
neuroticism
.
