Notes	Due to the manufacturing and export-driven orientation of Connecticut's economy, the impetus behind educational reform in the state during the 1980s must be understood in the context of concern that resulted from increased American competition with Japan and the effects of the growing influence of Japanese economic prowess on the state. Although Connecticut's predicament was akin to similar economic challenges and school reform movements nationwide, it was more greatly pronounced in a state that acutely felt the effects of Japanese economic growth in the 1980s. Despite an overarching concern regarding Connecticut's educational and economic quandary against a backdrop of a growing U.S. trade deficit with Japan, state leaders and residents, in similar fashion to national trends, exhibited a mixture of fascination and consternation relative to Japan and Japanese culture. Such fears were more subtle, residual manifestations of misperceptions and stereotypes that existed during the era of the Second World War and ensuing decades. Using newspapers, General Assembly transcripts, speeches and other commentary by political, business, and educational authorities in Connecticut to examine efforts at school reform and economic stability in the state, one can detect both an envy of Japan and an aversion to Japanese values. Considering the relationship between educational success and economic fortitude, which became more discernible and salient given the challenges presented by Japan, Connecticut presents an intriguing look at the intersection of school reform, economic concerns, and foreign competition in the context of the 1980s and 1990s.
