Title
The
Madness
of
Sir
Lancelot
: The
Problem
of
Identity
in
Malory's
Le
Morte
D'Arthur
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2008
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Thomas
Malory's
Le
Morte
d'Arthur
depicts
characters
facing
problems
of
identity
.
Chief
among
them,
Sir
Lancelot
faces
temporary
madness
when
overwhelmed
by the
incompatible
roles
he
plays
in
Arthur's
court
. A
useful
theoretical
lens
for
examining
these
identity
problems
is
identity
performance
theory
.
I
expand
upon
Dorsey
Armstrong's
argument
for the
role
of
identity
performance
and
formation
in
Malory's
text
by
examining
the "
Lancelot
and
Elaine
"
episode
because
this
selection
contains
important
psychological
insights
into
Lancelot
, and
provides
illustrations
of
identity
performance
.
I
show
how
both
Malory's
biography
and
late-medieval
political
,
social
, and
cultural
history
echo
these
postmodern
concerns
demonstrating
the
validity
of
applying
postmodern
theory
to a
fifteenth-century
text
.
I
then
explore
identity
performance
theory
showing
identity
as
socially
constructed
. The
following
section
provides
an
in-depth
discussion
of
identity
performance
.
Next
, to
better
contextualize
and
analyze
Lancelot's
period
of
madness
,
I
discuss
late-medieval
conceptions
and
treatments
of
insanity
from a
number
of
different
studies
.
Finally
,
I
examine
Lancelot's
six
roles
:
Arthur's
knight
,
Gwenyver's
paramour
,
Elaine's
lover
,
Galahad's
sire
, a
madman
, and
Le
Shyvalre
Mafete
.
I
argue
Lancelot
recognizes
his
imperfection
as a
knight
,
fails
to
fit
into the
rigid
identity
scripts
Arthur's
court
expects
him to
perform
, and
extricates
himself
from the
socially
constructed
and
unyielding
identities
placed
upon
him as a
Knight
of the
Round
Table
through
his
performance
.
