Notes
Today's
campuses
are
becoming
the
learning
grounds
for an
increasingly
diverse
student
population
. The "
traditional
"
college
student
,
age
eighteen
to
twenty-two
,
sufficiently
academically
prepared
, and
having
endless
time
to
socialize
and
study
,
often
portrayed
in
popular
media
outlets
is
no
longer
representative
of the
majority
of
students
enrolled
at
colleges
and
universities
across
the
nation
. As
our
higher
education
system
becomes
more
complex
,
made
up
of
institutions
with
various
missions
and
intentions
, the
students
served
by
financial
aid
administrators
have
increasingly
complex
needs
.
Even
on
seemingly
similar
campuses
the
student
body
represents
various
religions
,
ethnicities
,
sexual
orientations
, and
socio-economic
statuses
.
Regardless
of the
categorical
descriptions
of
students
it
is
fairly
safe
to
say
that
every
student
attending
an
institution
of
higher
education
has a
unique
financial
circumstance
and
therefore
different
expectations
of the
financial
services
provided
.
It
is
becoming
increasingly
apparent
that
students
could
benefit
a
great
deal
by
having
an
aspect
of
counseling
integrated
into the
financial
services
provided
by
institutions
in
order
to
make
appropriate
decisions
for their
own
situation
. As the
college
student
becomes
less
easily
defined
as a
unified
image
the
landscape
of
student
services
in
higher
education
need
to be
increasingly
fluid
to
suit
the
needs
of the
ever-changing
student
.
Professionals
in the
field
of
Financial
Aid
have had to
make
some
of the
most
tremendous
changes
as they have been
called
upon
to
change
their
approach
from a
field
that had
significantly
been
administrative
to
one
that
is
advertised
and
based
in
service
to
students
.
Many
institutions
have
gone
as
far
as to
restructure
the
organization
of their
institutions
to
include
the
financial
aid
office
under
Student
Affairs
as
opposed
to
Enrollment
or
Academic
Affairs
. In the
past
the
duties
of a
person
in the
financial
aid
profession
were
strictly
administrative
. A
person
in the
field
would
evaluate
a
student's
financial
need
based
on
concrete
formulas
and
award
them
financial
assistance
in
accordance
to
guidelines
administered
by the
federal
and
state
governments
and
institutional
policies
.
Over
time
the
idea
of
financial
aid
advising
emerged
and
administrators
of
aid
were
given
the
power
to
exercise
professional
judgment
based
on
individual
circumstances
.
Many
professionals
who
had
spent
their
careers
in a
formulated
financial
aid
world
were
suddenly
confronted
with the
challenge
of
treating
each
student
as an
individual
and
being
responsive
to their
personal
situations
. This
transition
poses
many
challenges
to
veteran
aid
administrators
as they
attempt
to, or in
some
cases
,
resist
change
.
Furthermore
, the
profession
as a
whole
needs
to
respond
to the
changes
by
adjusting
job
descriptions
,
qualifications
,
professional
development
opportunities
, and
overall
expectations
.
Too
many
aid
professionals
were, and
still
are,
ill
prepared
to
effectively
communicate
with and
counsel
students
and
very
limited
training
is
available
to
assist
in their
professional
development
. To that
means
I
plan
on
exploring
the
various
areas
in
which
I
think
counseling
methods
could
be
best
integrated
in to the
profession
and what
professional
development
opportunities
could
exist
to
allow
all
aid
administrators
to
become
more
effective
as they
advise
students
.
