Title
The
Limits
of
Language
:
Gender
,
Trauma
and the
Holocaust

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
project
, "The
Limits
of
Language
:
Gender
,
Trauma
and the
Holocaust
"
contributes
a
new
theoretical
reading
regarding
Holocaust
literature
.
Traditionally
,
gender
studies
have
provided
insight
into
gendered
responses
to
trauma
, but not
specifically
the
Holocaust
. In the
same
context
,
traditional
trauma
studies
have
addressed
the
Holocaust
, but not in a
gendered
way
. By
bringing
trauma
theorists
together
in
conversation
with
selected
literary
texts
,
complemented
by
commentary
from
gender
critics
, this
project
asserts
that
trauma
is
, in
fact
,
gendered
within
literature
.
Based
on this
argument
, the
theories
of
LaCapra
,
Leys
, and
Freud
are
tied
together
, and
enter
into a
new
discussion
of what
it
means
to
take
the
conventional
views
of
trauma
, and
relate
them to a
gendered
approach
,
exemplified
by
four
texts
,
D.M
Thomas's
,
Pictures
at an
Exhibition
,
1993
,
Anne
Michaels's
Fugitive
Pieces
,
1996
,
Elie
Wiesel's
The
Accident
,
1988
, and
Aharon
Appelfeld's
,
Katerina
,
1992
.
Hypothetically
, "
survivor
shame
"
is
the
emotional
precursor
to "
working-through
" and
is
the
traumatic
symptom
of
female
roles
within
literature
,
who
eventually
recover
from the
trauma
. On the
other
hand
, "
survivor
guilt
"
is
the
emotional
precursor
to "
acting
out
" and
is
generally
a
traumatic
reaction
seen
in
male
roles
,
who
seldom
recover
from the
traumatic
experience
. The
use
of
language
becomes
valuable
in
understanding
whether
certain
characters
can
overcome
traumatic
experience
based
on
gender
.
I
have
noted
in this
project
that
males
do
not have
access
to the
language
that
speaks
about
the
Holocaust
directly
;
whereas
,
females
have
far
more
access
to
traumatic
language
. The
four
Holocaust
related
texts
I
utilize
,
emphasize
the
relationship
between
literature
and
language
in
order
to
consider
more
fully
what
it
means
to have a
gendered
reaction
to
trauma
. In the
texts
I
look
at,
I
am
invested
in
literary
representations
of how
characters
use
language
(or
not)
as a
vehicle
for
exploring
and
recovering
from
trauma
. From the
perspective
of
literary
studies
,
literature
can
serve
as an
exemplary
tool
for
conveying
these
dynamics
more
fully
. In
other
words
, this
literature
reveals
how
language
becomes
necessary
for
understanding
and
recovering
from
trauma
. In this
way
,
it
may
be
beneficial
to
explore
the
trauma
and
emotional
reactions
of
fictional
characters
who
serve
as
models
for
real-life
theories
.
