of the

Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
examine
William
Faulkner's
and
Ken
Kesey's
rendering
of
time
through
the
theme
of the
past
.
Time
for
Faulkner
and
Kesey
is
not
orderly
and
it
does
not
follow
a
linear
or
chronological
pattern
. They
argue
instead
that
time
is
fluid
and
malleable
and that
it
is
measured
in
human
experiences
and not by the
mechanical
ticking
of a
clock
.
Each
chapter
of this
thesis
deals
with
one
novel
and its
characters
'
relationship
to
time
.
Faulkner's
Light
in
August
and
Kesey's
One
Flew
Over
the
Cuckoo's
Nest
, for
instance
,
reveal
how a
community's
past
combines
with an
individual's
in
order
to
shape
or
warp
behavior
.
Faulkner's
The
Sound
and the
Fury
and
Kesey's
Sometimes
a
Great
Notion
reflect
family
pressures
; these
two
novels
deal
with the
fall
of a
family
because
of its
members
'
inability
to
cope
with their
past
.
Faulkner's
The
Unvanquished
exposes
a
culmination
of
both
community
and
family
pressures
on
identity
.
