Notes
The
flood
of
1955
will
live
in the
people's
minds
in the
state
of
Connecticut
for
years
. The
flood
was a
tragedy
and was
one
of the
worst
disasters
in
Connecticut
history
. The
flood
showed
the
courage
and the
sacrifice
of
many
people
who
gave
their
lives
so
that
others
could
live
. This
thesis
will
cover
the
disaster
, the
rebuilding
, and the
help
that
came
locally
and from the
federal
government
. The
thesis
will
compare
and
contrast
some
other
floods
at the
end
of the
paper
. This
paper
will also
show
a
time
when
people
still
cared
and
helped
one
another
. This
flood
brought
death
,
destruction
, and
poverty
to
many
people
.
We
shall
look
at the
effects
the
flood
had on
businesses
, on
homes
and on the
general
welfare
of
people
. The
people
who
were
affected
have
some
stories
to
tell
of their
experiences
of the
disaster
. The
stories
,
mostly
found
in
newspapers
and from
memory
, will
hopefully
shed
some
light
on this
disaster
. The
two
towns
that
we
will
focus
on in this
thesis
will be the
towns
of
Unionville
and
Winsted
. The
flood
and its
wrath
wreaked
havoc
on the
Farmington
Valley
area
of the
state
of
Connecticut
. The
state
experienced
much
disaster
and
regret
for not
being
prepared
. Was the
state
ready
to
face
Diane
, the
hurricane
that
brought
torrential
rain
and then
flooding
? Were
people
warned
sufficiently
enough
to be
prepared
to
leave
at a
minutes
notice
? These are
some
of the
questions
hopefully
to be
answered
in this
paper
.
