Notes
The
topic
of
research
in this
paper
, "The
future
of
nationalities
and
regions
in an
integrating
Europe
: The
Case
of
Catalonia
",
involves
all
aspects
of
Catalan
life
in
order
to
develop
and
understand
their
particular
and
separate
nationality
. With the
rise
of
globalization
and
technology
, the
modern
world
has
become
more
aware
of this
sub-region
within
Spain
. What
is
the
future
of this
once
repressed
area
? Are
Catalonians
destined
to
perpetuate
their
shared
identity
with
Spain
, or will the
region
rise
to
independence
? This
region
,
area
of
land
located
within
the
political
boundaries
of
Spain
, has
grown
from the
time
of the
Dark
Ages
until
its
demise
under
Francisco
Franco
. For
decades
, this
region
was
ruled
under
harsh
laws
and
tough
punishment
, for
example
Franco's
dictatorship
was
subject
to a
strict
style
of
leadership
emphasizing
nationalism
,
corporatism
,
traditionalism
,
criminalization
of
certain
political
ideologies
, and the
most
debilitating
measure
taken
was
prohibiting
their
Catalan
language
and
abolishing
the
autonomous
government
of
Catalonia
in
1939
.
After
the
death
of
Franco
in
1975
, a
democracy
surfaced
and the
Catalans
emerged
from the
rubble
. The
opportunity
to
host
the
1992
Olympic
Games
was
taken
great
advantage
of. This
event
created
a
resurgence
of
pride
and
culture
among
the
citizens
,
which
provided
them an
opportunity
to
rise
again
and
become
known
to the
world
. This
pride
spans
from the
traditional
Catalan
language
,
dance
, and
even
symbols
.
Since
the
Games
,
Catalonia
has had an
increased
amount
of
tourism
and
immigration
. The
tourism
has
helped
the
economy
and with the
spread
of
Catalan
identity
,
however
, the
immigration
has
harmed
them. This
immigration
to
Catalonia
has
caused
a
decrease
in the
use
of
Catalan
language
and has
created
a
more
multicultural
population
. This
feeling
of
nationalism
among
the
Catalonians
has also
brought
about
political
changes
within
the
region
.
Recent
referendums
focused
on the
desire
for or
against
Catalonia's
independence
have
shed
light
on
future
possibilities
of a
separate
Catalan
identity
within
Europe
. These
feelings
of
national
pride
can
be
compared
with those in
other
European
nations
such
as;
Scotland
,
Flanders
, and
Kosovo
.
Both
Scotland
and
Catalonia
remain
in the
shadows
of their "
mother
countries
"
instead
of
having
the
independence
they
both
desire
.
However
, these
desired
political
changes
in
Catalonia
have had
mixed
reactions
from
Spain
. The
most
potent
and
decisive
way
nationalist
identity
is
communicated
and
nationalist
mass
movements
are
generated
and
sustained
is
through
the
language
and
symbolism
of
nationalism
. This has been
represented
through
the
perseverance
of
maintaining
the
Catalan
language
, their
separate
regional
political
powers
, and
excellent
use
of the
media
.
Language
and
symbolism
,
rite
and
ceremony
,
play
a
crucial
part
in
demarcating
boundaries
between
communities
.
Education
, the
National
Church
, and
sporting
occasions
have
provided
almost
limitless
possibilities
for
deploying
the
language
and
symbolism
of the
nation
; for
example
with
Catalonian
flags
,
anthems
, and
folk
customs
. Also
through
the
use
of
national
recreations
and
spectacular
cultural
performances
such
as the
sardana
dance
and the
human
towers
. These
symbols
may
be
manipulated
by
political
movements
and
attributed
with a
nationalist
meaning
.
Catalan
nationalists
can
be
seen
as an
example
for the
rest
of the
European
Community
who
deals
or
copes
with
situations
such
as their
own
.
Nationalism
and
identity
are
topics
that are
revisited
frequently
in
Europe
.
Perhaps
we
will
see
the
Catalonian
people
assert
their
independence
:
Is
Catalonia
part
of
Spain
?
