Notes	Individuals with mental illness are often the victims of stigmatization and discrimination from others, which may have severe negative consequences on treatment outcomes, recovery success, and perceived quality of life for such individuals. Such stigmatization and discrimination may result from a lack of familiarity (i.e., contact) with individuals with mental illness and/or personal characteristics or dispositions of those participating in stigmatization and discrimination. The purpose of the present study was to examine how individuals' levels of familiarity with individuals with mental illness and degree of sense of coherence (i.e., a person's sense of comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness of their environment) influence the amount of social distance they would prefer to keep from individuals with mental illness. The present study utilized three measures, including a Social Distance Scale, a Level of Familiarity Scale, and a Sense of Coherence Questionnaire. Participants in this study were 132 undergraduate students enrolled in psychology courses at Central Connecticut State University. It was hypothesized that increased levels of familiarity and a stronger sense of coherence would result in a decreased desire for social distance. The results of this study were not significant, which may be attributed to variations in participants' understanding of the term ‘mental illness' and the relatively young age of the participants. Future research should explore how the term ‘mental illness' may be defined, utilize a more diverse population, and consider additional personality characteristics or dispositions in order to further examine factors that may affect the amount of social distance desired from such individuals.
