among
potential
first
and
later
generation
college
students
was
explored
using
longitudinal
data
from the
National
Center
of
Educational
Statistics
.
Logistical
analyses
indicated
that the
measures
of
family
structure
considered
in this
study
(single
versus
two-parent
family
,
married
versus
cohabitating
couples
,
parent
gender
in
single
parent
families)
, and
parents
'
education
(college
generation)
were not
significant
predictors
of
college
enrollment
once
socio-economic
status
was
controlled
.
Parent
involvement
in
post-secondary
planning
activities
related
significantly
to
college
attendance
and
ethnicity
associated
reliably
with
differential
participation
.
Family
income
rather
than
structure
was
consistently
the
strongest
predictor
of
college
attendance
,
suggesting
the
salience
of
economic
factors
supersedes
family
composition
or
parents
'
college
experience
in
predicting
college
enrollment
.
Implications
for
educational
practitioners
are
discussed
.
