Thesis

Author
Mallory, Andrew Phillips
Title
The
Hartford
Sermon
Notebook
Transcribed
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2008
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
thesis
has
two
main
objectives
. The
first
is
to
complete
an
accurate
transcription
of
over
two
hundred
pages
of
colonial
handwriting
contained
in a
compact
sermon
notebook
that
I
have
entitled
The
Hartford
Sermon
Notebook
. The
second
objective
of the
thesis
is
to
conduct
an
analysis
of the
notebook's
sermons
relying
on the
guidance
of
several
key
Puritan
scholars
, in
order
to
investigate
how these
sermons
fit
into
our
current
understanding
of
Puritan
history
and
theology
. A
multicausal
approach
guides
the
analysis
,
citing
several
different
historical
and
theological
disciplines
in
order
to
complete
a
broad
analysis
of
certain
themes
contained
in the
notebook
. A
multicausal
approach
works
well
because
I
believe
that
applying
a
wide
range
of
methodologies
is
the
best
way
to
develop
an
accurate
picture
of the
past
. The
paleography
and
transcription
involved
took
nearly
two
years
to
complete
.
Each
sermon
has been
examined
at
least
three
times
, with
each
successive
analysis
improving
the
accuracy
and
completeness
of the
final
transcription
, and
some
of the
more
interesting
paleographic
challenges
are
included
in a
photo-static
reproduction
of
Isaac
Foster's
November
14
,
1680
Sacrament
Day
sermon
. In the
analysis
,
I
explore
the
nature
and
occurrence
of
several
important
Puritan
religious
themes
. The
sermons
that
Hartford's
ministers
and
teachers
delivered
in
1679
and
1680
contained
a
variety
of
subjects
ranging
from
covenant
doctrines
, the
natural
man
and the
saint
, the
processes
of
regeneration
,
conversion
,
sanctification
,
justification
, the
power
of
sin
and the
glory
of
grace
among
others
. The
sermons
transcribed
in this
project
deal
not
only
with the
broader
subjects
of
reformed
theology
, but also
contain
exhortations
on
intemperance
and its
impact
on
Indians
, and the
pervasiveness
of the
Devil
in the
lives
of the
congregation
. The
principal
research
question
is
general
; are
certain
specific
conclusions
of
New
England
Puritan
scholars
supported
by the
Hartford
sermon
notebook
? The
notebook
contains
a
remarkably
complete
two-year
record
of
preaching
in
Hartford
Connecticut
during
the
years
1679
and
1680
. This
thesis
does
not
tackle
every
theme
found
in the
notebook
, but
it
does
deal
with
several
important
subjects
from the
historiography
of
New
England
Puritanism
.
More
specifically
,
does
the
sermon
notebook
support
the
claims
of
Puritan
scholars
regarding
covenant
theology
, and
does
the
language
of
Hartford's
ministers
regarding
covenants
support
our
current
understanding
of
New
England
Puritan
covenant
theology
in the
seventeenth
century
? How have the
themes
of
conversion/regeneration
,
justification
,
redemption
, and
election
or
visible
sainthood
been
examined
by
other
scholars
, and
do
their
conclusions
appear
to be
supported
by the
sermons
of
Hartford's
ministers
?
Finally
, the
sermons
preached
in
Hartford
were
diverse
,
including
several
"
occasional
"
sermons
such
as
Thanksgiving
Day
sermons
,
ordination
sermons
, and
sacrament
day
sermons
.
Combined
with the
notebook's
more
numerous
regular
sermons
(those
generally
preached
on
Sunday)
, The
Hartford
Sermon
Notebook
adds
to
our
current
understanding
of
Colonial
Connecticut
religious
history
, and
is
an
important
new
primary
source
for
New
England
Puritan
scholars
and
Colonialists
alike
.
