Notes	The estimated population in Connecticut is 3,510,297 and ranks 4th in life expectancy at an average age of 78.7 years. As the population ages, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to rise proportionately. In Connecticut, there are over 100,000 people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease along with 300,000 caregivers who care for them. After an individual is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he or she will survive an average of nine years, and most individuals will require ongoing care, either at home, or in a nursing home for the duration of their illness. This will place an overwhelming and emotional responsibility on the caregiver. The purpose of this study is to examine how Alzheimer's disease affects family caregivers. To that end, I administered surveys in five different towns in Connecticut, attended support meetings and had personal interviews with the social worker and director who conducted the meetings. The population for this study consists of adult men and women in Connecticut, who provide care to a family member suffering from Alzheimer's disease. This study sample consisted of 59 caregivers who voluntarily participated in the surveys. The results of this study indicate that there is an enormous burden associated with family caregiving. They experience added complicated challenges, such as expenses, managing work and family plus this limits their ability to interact with their patient on a regular basis. The data collected from the questions of the survey were made into charts to show the stress level of the caregivers. This study also states the excuses why other family members won't help the primary caregiver.
