Title
The
Causes
of
Armed
Conflict
and
Human
Rights
Abuses
in
Central
Africa
and the
Impact
on the
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2008
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In the
Central
Africa
Region
four
million
people
from the
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo
(DRC)
have
died
largely
unnoticed
by
western
media
from
armed
conflict
and
human
rights
abuses
.
Some
scholars
have
written
extensively
that the
conflict
in
Central
Africa
,
particularly
in
Eastern
Congo
is
an
ethnic
conflict
complicated
by
African
primitiveness
.
Some
other
scholars
also
argue
that the
conflict
in
Central
Africa
has
is
roots
in the
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo's
lack
of
good
governance
,
thus
allowing
foreign
armies
to
come
in to
exploit
the
DRC
minerals
. The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
evaluate
these
arguments
in
relation
to
armed
conflict
and
human
rights
abuses
and also the
illegal
exploitation
of the
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo's
mineral
resources
by
Rwanda
,
Uganda
,
Burundi
and by
international
corporations
from
various
countries
.
It
examines
the
role
played
by
Congolese
warlords
,
powerful
multinational
companies
and
international
lobbies
in this
broad
conflict
in
Central
Africa
and
assesses
the
impact
on the
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo
,
especially
the
eastern
part
of the
country
. This
thesis
refutes
arguments
that the
conflict
is
mainly
an
ethnic
conflict
resulting
from
tribalism
or
African
primitiveness
compounded
by the
Congo
government's
structural
weakness
.
Blaming
the
conflict
on
colonial
legacy
is
also
simplistic
. This
thesis
establishes
that the
conflict
is
substantially
the
consequence
of the
foreign
policies
of
United
States
,
United
Kingdom
,
France
and
Belgium
in the
Central
Africa
Region
. As the
Cold
war
ended
, the
great
powers
led
by the
United
States
and
France
orchestrated
their
quest
for a
new
order
based
on
economic
interest
and
force
. The
Democratic
Republic
of
Congo
with its
huge
mineral
deposits
was on the
agenda
and
Rwanda
,
Uganda
and
Burundi
materialized
the
great
powers
new
order
policies
in
Central
Africa
by
invading
the
DRC
(Force)
and
pillaging
mineral
resources
(Economic
Interests)
.
