single
group
design
study
examined
the
effects
of an
intervention
program
on "at
risk
"
middle
school
students
in an
urban
school
district
.
Ten
7th
grade
students
identified
as at
risk
of not
successfully
completing
their
middle
school
education
participated
in this
study
. The
school
prevention
team
consisting
of a
social
worker
,
guidance
counselor
,
psychologist
,
prevention
specialist
, and
truancy
specialist
provided
students
with
twelve
intervention
sessions
targeting
positive
attitude
towards
aggressive
behavior
,
non-compliant
school
behavior
, and
academic
performance
.
Intervention
sessions
taught
students
,
social
skills
,
exposed
them to the
Ripple
Effect
Program
(a
media-based
software
program
that
interacts
with
students
to
improve
school
behavior)
,
taught
them
conflict
resolution
techniques
, and
provided
students
with
academic
support
.
Quantitative
and
qualitative
data
were
collected
to
ascertain
the
effects
the
intervention
program
had on
student
attitudes
toward
aggressive
behavior
and
overall
school
behavior
including
academic
performance
. A
School
Climate
Survey
developed
to
measure
aggressive
attitudes
was
administered
to
student
participants
.
Students
'
data
from
reports
cards
,
discipline
referrals
,
suspensions
,
absences
, and
reading
grades
was
collected
and
analyzed
at the
pre-
,
post-
, and
follow-up
stages
.
Students
,
intervention
staff
members
,
parents
, and
reading
teachers
also
participated
in
surveys
and
open-ended
questions
to
ascertain
their
perceptions
of the
intervention
program
. The
overall
findings
revealed
that
intervention
programs
can
effectively
change
the
attitudes
and
behavior
of "
at-risk
"
students
.
Furthermore
, the
perceptions
that
students
,
intervention
staff
members
,
parents
, and
teachers
had were
very
positive
towards
the
effectiveness
of the
intervention
program
.
