Title
The
Effects
of
Alcohol
and
Attorney
Gender
on
Perceptions
of
Sexual
Assault
Cases

Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
more
closely
look
at the
effect
of
biases
in
juror
perceptions
of
sexual
assault
cases
based
on
two
factors
: the
gender
of the
prosecution
and
defense
attorneys
, and the
presence
of
alcohol
as a
mediating
factor
in the
case
.
Factorial
surveys
were the
method
utilized
to
test
the
three
variables
. The
sample
consisted
of
91
college
men
and
women
at
Central
Connecticut
State
University
.
Students
were
asked
to
read
a
sample
scenario
involving
a
sexual
assault
and they were
asked
to
answer
the
questions
at the
end
. The
results
from the
study
indicated
that the
presence
of
alcohol
had a
significant
main
effect
on the
perception
of
guilt
;
more
respondents
felt
the
defendant
was
guilty
when
alcohol
was
mentioned
in the
scenario
. There also was an
interactive
effect
of
attorney
gender
and
alcohol
such
that
significantly
fewer
respondents
perceived
the
defendant
as
guilty
in the
alcohol
scenario
when
the
defense
attorney
was
female
as
opposed
to
male
.
Thus
the
gender
of the
attorneys
appeared
to
mitigate
the
influence
of
alcohol
on the
perception
of
guilt
. These
findings
suggest
that
sexual
assault
cases
,
particularly
those
involving
alcohol
,
might
be
influenced
by
juror
bias
in the
courtroom
.
