Notes
While
there
is
considerable
literature
indicating
associations
amongst
and
between
religiosity
,
spirituality
, and
facets
of
well-being
,
it
is
still
unclear
as to
which
dimensions
of
religiosity
and
spirituality
better
predict
well-being
. The
current
study
examined
one
dimension
of
religiosity
and
one
dimension
of
spirituality
,
specifically
objective
religiosity
and
spiritual
transcendence
, and their
associations
with
facets
of
well-being
(i.e.
,
satisfaction
with
life
,
affect
, and
depressive
symptoms)
amongst
Malaysians
. This
study
addressed
the
gaps
in the
literature
by
evaluating
the
predictive
effects
of the
components
of
religiosity
and
spirituality
on
well-being
. The
present
study
also
examined
if
spiritual
transcendence
moderated
the
relationship
between
perceived
stress
and
depressive
symptoms
,
suggesting
that these
effects
can
possibly
operate
as a
stress
buffer
.
Participants
of this
study
were
comprised
of
Malaysians
from
various
religious
backgrounds
(i.e.
,
Muslims
,
Hindus
,
Buddhists
, or
Christians)
.
Participants
completed
a
packet
of
questionnaires
which
included
a
satisfaction
with
life
measure
, a
depressive
symptoms
measure
, an
affect
measure
, a
perceived
stress
measure
, a
religiosity
measure
, and a
spirituality
measure
. The
major
findings
of the
present
study
include
:
1)
a
greater
sense
of
spiritual
transcendence
was
negatively
related
to
depressive
symptoms
,
negative
affect
, and
perceived
stress
;
2)
perceived
stress
was
positively
related
to
depressive
symptoms
and
negative
affect
and
negatively
related
to
positive
affect
and
satisfaction
with
life
; and
3)
spiritual
transcendence
was a
stronger
predictor
of
depressive
symptoms
compared
to
objective
religiosity
.
