has
shown
that
African
American
college
students
who
place
an
emphasis
on their
ethnic
identity
are
more
likely
to
experience
more
positive
academic
outcomes
.
Further
,
African
Americans
who
experience
minority
status
stress
are
better
able
to
deal
with
psychological
problems
when
they have a
secure
sense
of
ethnic
identity
. The
present
study
examined
the
role
of
racial
identity
development
and
psychological
well-being
among
African
American
college
students
.

Black
college
students
were
administered
tests
assessing
racial
identity
,
African
self-consciousness
, and
psychological
well-being
. The
aims
of the
study
were, to
examine
the
relationships
between
racial
identity
development
,
African
self-consciousness
, and
psychological
well-being
among
African
American
college
students
. The
results
revealed
a
significant
negative
correlation
between
the
Preencounter
stage
of the
racial
identity
scale
and the
individual's
quality
of
social
support
and
self-esteem
.
