The
present
study
explored
the
relationship
between
racism-related
stress
,
cultural
values
,
spirituality
,
health
behaviors
, and
mental
health
among
Asian-Indians
and/or
Pakistanis
(South
Asians)
in
Connecticut
. To
study
these
variables
, a
160
item
survey
was
distributed
to
approximately
100
adult
Asian-Indians
and/or
Pakistanis
residing
in
Connecticut
.

It
was
hypothesized
that
South
Asians
who
report
greater
amounts
of
perceived
discrimination
and
racism-related
stress
, as
measured
by the
Asian
American
Racism-Related
Stress
Inventory
(Liang
&
Kim
2004)
are
more
likely
to
report
experiencing
psychological
distress
, as
measured
by the
Center
for
Epidemiologic
Studies
Depression
(CES-D)
scale
(Radloff
,
1977)
and
more
negative
health
behaviors
, as
measured
by the
Health
Behavior
Checklist
(HBCL)
(Vickers
et
al.
,
1990)
. The
Asian
American
Values
Scale-Multidimensional
(Kim
&Gladys
,
2005)
was
used
to
measure
cultural
values
that are
common
to
Asian
Americans
. The
five
subscales
are
collectivism
,
humility
,
family
recognition
,
emotional
self
control
and
conformity
to
norms
.

Adherence
to the
Asian
Americans
Values
Scale
(AAVS-M)
was also
hypothesized
to
predict
less
psychological
distress
(as
measured
by the
CES-D
and
poorer
health
behaviors
(as
measured
by the
HBCL
. These
findings
could
be
similar
to the
importance
of
ethnic
identity
development
.

Spirituality
, as
measured
by The
Spiritual
Transcendence
Scale
(STS)
,
(Piedmont
,
1999)
was
hypothesized
to
predict
more
positive
health
behaviors
(as
measured
by the
HBCL)
and
less
psychological
distress
(as
measured
by the
CES-D)
.
