Notes	Rural, untouched land is being threatened by construction of subdivisions and retail buildings to support the growing population and continuing urban and suburban sprawl. Natural resources and the environment are drastically changing, and are in need of protection. One resource that is important to protect is a watershed. And one way to protect a watershed is through conservation which can be accomplished by purchasing and managing land. This thesis' study area is the Nepaug Watershed, located in the counties of Litchfield and Hartford, and has a 9.5 billion gallon storage capacity reservoir used for drinking water that supports 400,000 people in the Hartford metropolitan area. Providing so many people with clean potable drinking water, it is important to protect the source and surrounding watershed area. A survey, of organizations with interest in the Nepaug Watershed, was conducted to investigate how respondents prioritized land when considering land purchase. The intent of the thesis was to see if and how organizations prioritize land in the Nepaug Watershed for conservation. The information reported in this thesis is based on ten survey responses received between August 2, 2001 and July 31, 2002. The respondents were made up of three town planners, two conservation commissions, one town official, two environmental organizations, one state environmental agency and a water company. Questions were ranked on a five point system, based on importance and priority: very high, high, medium, low and very low. The title of the survey was: You have money to protect the public water supply watershed, how would you rank these factors when considering land purchase? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to map the results and compare the organization's high priority parcels. GIS data, for environmental and cultural features, was collected and created for spatial analysis. A parcel base layer was generated consisting of 2,403 parcels that were queried and attributed based on the survey results. Overlays were compared and conclusions were made. They were: even though the organizations varied with the ranking of importance, parcels that have the highest priorities surround the public water supply and contributing water courses. Statistical analysis found five groups based on how similar they ranked the criteria to each other. Patterns of priority among issues showed that large lot and adjacent to protected land to be the most important. Pattern of priorities among parcels were analyzed based on the total of all organizations. A map was created to display the parcels of high priority with parcels that are already protected and parcels that are undeveloped highlighted. This visually shows where one should inquire purchasing land and where to go next if needed. Survey results maps were made for all ten organizations. Parcels with the highest priorities are the ones that surround the reservoir for all ten organizations. While others also had high priority parcels along streams and brooks that enter the reservoir. The water company had the highest rankings for all the criteria, and had the highest ranking parcels within the watershed. This thesis' findings suggest that the ten organizations vary in how they prioritize land in the Nepaug Watershed for conservation, but do have similar results of parcels of high priority. It can be concluded that land adjacent to the reservoir and already protected land is a priority to all, and would be investigated further for acquiring. All the organizations have some interest in protecting the natural beauty of small towns while protecting a valuable resource and being mindful of the importance to protect a drinking water supply.
