Social

Notes
The
present
research
examined
the
relationship
of
social
capital
to
reported
health
status
using
data
from the
Social
Capital
Benchmark
Survey
(SCBS)
.
Two
hypotheses
were
examined
:
(1)
higher
scores
on the
11
dimensions
of
social
capital
assessed
in the
SCBS
will be
associated
with
better
reported
health
status
, and
(2)
the
relationship
between
social
capital
and
health
status
will be
stronger
for
women
than for
men
and for
older
rather
than
younger
respondents
.
All
data
used
in this
study
was
taken
from the
phone-based
SCBS
conducted
in
2000
. The
survey
included
data
from a
total
of
26,200
individuals
from
41
communities/regions
representing
29
states
within
the
U.S
. The
SCBS
contains
approximately
70
questions
that
examine
eleven
key
social
capital
dimensions
:
social
trust
,
inter-racial
trust
,
conventional
politics
participation
,
protest
politics
participation
,
civic
leadership
,
associational
involvement
,
informal
socializing
,
diversity
of
friendships
,
giving
and
volunteering
,
faith
based
engagement
, and
equality
of
civic
engagement
across
the
community
. To
assess
the
first
hypothesis
,
regression
techniques
were
first
used
to
examine
the
relationship
between
various
demographic
and
ecological
characteristics
of the
different
regions
and
reported
health
.
We
then
correlated
the
11
social
capital
dimensions
with the
residual
health
scores
for
each
community
after
the
effects
of the
demographic
and
ecological
variables
on
health
were
removed
.
Only
two
of the
11
types
of
social
capital
were
significantly
correlated
with
reported
health
:
social
trust
and
inter-racial
trust
. The
second
hypothesis
was
evaluated
using
three-way
ANOVAs
that
examined
the
effects
of
gender
,
age
and
level
of
trust
(social
or
inter-racial)
on
reported
health
. The
hypothesis
predicts
a
three-way
interaction
,
i.e.
, that the
effect
of the
trust
variables
on
health
will be
strongest
for
older
females
.
Both
ANOVAs
found
significant
three-way
interactions
, but
subsequent
examination
of the
interaction
indicated
that
older
women
did
not
show
the
greatest
impact
of
higher
social
capital
on
health
as
predicted
. A
discussion
of these
findings
and
implications
for
future
research
are
included
.
