Title
Substance
Abuse
in the
Construction
Industry
Publisher

Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
A
career
in
construction
exposes
a
tradesperson
to an
ever
changing
environment
with
known
as
well
as
unknown
hazards
.
Unfortunately
one
of the
unknowns
is
the
use
of
illicit
substances
and the
abuse
of
legal
medications
by
some
of the
workers
.
According
to the
Department
of
Health
and
Human
Services
(DHHS)
73%
of
drug
users
and
abusers
are
employed
.
Surveys
conducted
by
various
government
agencies
show
that a
large
portion
of the
73%
state
their
main
source
of
employment
is
in
construction
.
It
is
acknowledged
that
when
a
person
consumes
a
legal
or
illegal
drug
there are
physiological
and
psychological
effects
.
Two
concerns
of the
industry
regarding
these
facts
are the
effects
on
injury
rates
and the
loss
of
property
.
Pre-hire
drug
screening
is
a
control
mechanism
to
aid
in
identifying
prospective
employees
who
may
tend
to
report
for
work
under
the
influence
. The
collection
and
testing
is
conducted
by
DHHS
certified
labs
and
technicians
. The
substances
and
drugs
being
tested
for in
specimens
fall
into the
categories
of
opiates
,
cocaine
,
barbiturates
,
amphetamines
, and
marijuana
. The
devices
and
instruments
used
in the
immunoassay
and
validation
process
are
controlled
and
approved
by the
Food
and
Drug
Administration
(FDA)
. There are
businesses
that
attempt
to
profit
from
producing
and
offering
products
for the
purpose
of
circumventing
the
screening
and
testing
procedures
. These
products
are
used
to
dilute
,
mask
, or
adulterate
a
specimen
.
Someone
only
needs
to
spend
a
short
time
surfing
the
internet
to
find
hundreds
of
thousands
of
solutions
,
elixirs
, and
prosthetics
to
help
in
hiding
their
drug
usage
.
Government
and
private
agencies
constantly
monitor
these
items
in
order
remain
a
step
ahead
and be
able
to
assure
there are
repeated
updates
to the
validity
testing
methodology
. The
intent
of this
study
is
to
research
and
provide
information
of an
important
feature
of a
company
wide
safety
program
.
Specifically
it
is
an
overview
of the
parameters
of
pre-hire
drug
and
substance
screening
as
it
pertains
to the
construction
industry
.
