Abstract
Although
textbooks
are
vital
components
to a
college
education
, their
value
to their
owners
often
fades
at the
conclusion
of a
course
,
when
students
must
purchase
the
books
for their
next
set
of
courses
. The
traditional
options
available
to
students
were
either
to
sell
their
textbooks
to the
campus
bookstore
or to
other
students
by
advertising
on a
bulletin
board
. This
project's
main
goal
is
to
develop
a
web
application
that
enables
CCSU
students
to
sell
or
trade
used
textbooks
.
Instead
of
adopting
a
traditional
e-commerce
role
,
our
site
focuses
on
initiating
contact
between
sellers
and
buyers
. In
planning
this
project
,
our
group
decided
to
build
the
web
application
using
various
open-source
or
open-standard
software
and
systems
.
Among
these are
Linux
,
Java
(JSPs
and
servlets)
,
MySQL
,
JDBC
,
Apache
Tomcat
, and the
Apache
Struts
framework
.
Some
of these were
chosen
because
of
budget
limitations
;
others
because
we
had
some
experience
with
which
we
wished
to
expand
; and
others
because
they would
provide
use
with
new
challenges
.
Additionally
,
we
utilized
a
free
web
service
from
Amazon.com
that
allowed
our
application
to
query
their
product
database
,
matching
ISBNs
with
book
information
,
including
title
,
author
,
edition
, and an
image
of the
front
cover
. The
outcome
of
our
project
is
a
viable
web
application
that
meets
our
intended
objectives
. The
application's
primary
functions
pertain
to
buyers
(posting
a
book)
and
sellers
(searching
for
books
and
making
offers)
.
Additionally
,
secondary
functions
were also
implemented
including
account
registration
,
password
resets
, and
other
functions
. This
paper
will
present
and
elaborate
on the
details
of
our
project
and the
site
we
created
,
TextTrader
.
