Teacher
stress
and
burnout
have
emerged
over
the
past
20
years
as a
serious
concern
for
teachers
,
students
and
parents
. This
study
tested
the
hypothesis
that
teachers
who
participate
in
aerobic
exercise
and have
increased
parent
involvement
in their
classrooms
will have
lower
stress
and
consequently
are
significantly
less
likely
to
experience
burnout
and
job
dissatisfaction
.
One
hundred
sixty
elementary
school
teachers
from
across
the
state
of
Connecticut
were
given
56-item
surveys
that
contained
the
following
four
components
: The
Kyriacou
&
Sutcliffe's
(1978)
Teacher
Stress
inventory
,
Maslach's
(1986)
Burnout
inventory
, the
Bay
Areas
School
Reform
questionnaire
(2001)
consisting
of the
section
on
teacher
and
parent
outreach
and
parent
involvement
, and
Reuben
&
Solomon's
(1989)
Physical
Advanced
Activities
of
Daily
Living
.
One
hundred
surveys
were
returned
and
used
in the
correlational
study
. The
results
provided
some
support
for
both
hypotheses
. The
means
and
standard
deviations
for
each
scale
are
found
in
Table
1
. The
results
found
that
teachers
who
participated
in
moderate
physical
activity
reported
less
stress
(see
Table
2)
. The
data
also
suggest
that
teachers
who
have
positive
relationships
with
parents
expressed
less
burnout
(see
Table
3)
. These
findings
are
congruent
with the
theory
that
teachers
who
complete
moderate
physical
activity
and have
strong
teacher
and
parent
relationships
will be
less
likely
to
experience
stress
and
burnout
.
Future
research
should
examine
school
districts
that
provide
exercise
programs
for their
teachers
.
It
is
also
important
to
examine
the
effects
exercise
has on an
individual's
physiology
.
Finally
,
more
research
needs
to be
conducted
on
in-service
programs
that
help
parents
and
teachers
better
communicate
.
