Self-Injurious
Behavior

Master's Thesis
Notes
Self-injurious
behavior
is
a
dysfunctional
coping
mechanism
that
helps
some
adolescents
manage
stressful
situations
.
Paradoxically
,
some
adolescents
purposely
cause
physical
harm
to
themselves
in an
attempt
to
feel
better
.
Although
it
is
possible
for any
adolescents
to
use
self-injury
as a
way
to
self
soothe
, there are
several
precursors
that
could
indicate
a
propensity
toward
this
behavior
.
Adolescents
who
have been
physically
,
sexually
, or
emotionally
abused
are
more
apt
to
harm
themselves
as
well
as those
who
grew
up
in
invalidating
and
chaotic
environments
.
Self-injury
gives
adolescents
some
sense
of
power
in an
otherwise
unmanageable
situation
. This
paper
is
divided
into
two
major
parts
.
First
it
looks
at the
reasons
why
adolescents
self-injure
and their
characteristics
of the
past
and
present
.
It
defines
self-injurious
behavior
and then
explores
how
it
affects
the
lives
of those
who
engage
in
it
.
It
identifies
the
various
positive
reinforcements
they
gain
from the
behavior
that
keeps
them
resorting
to
it
and
describes
the
circumstances
and
experiences
that have
lead
them to
develop
such
an
unhealthy
coping
mechanism
.
Identifying
present
personality
traits
and
behaviors
also
helps
to
recognize
those
adolescents
who
may
be
harming
themselves
because
they
lack
healthy
coping
mechanisms
.
It
is
important
to
know
the
past
and
present
characteristics
of
adolescents
who
are
injuring
themselves
in
order
to
effectively
help
them
gain
healthier
coping
skills
. In an
effort
to
help
the
reader
personify
the
information
a
fictional
character
will
embody
how the
qualities
of
self-injurers
manifest
in a
person's
life
. The
story
of the
character
,
named
Anastasia
,
is
interspersed
throughout
the
first
part
of the
paper
and will be
italicized
for
clarity
. Any
resemblance
to an
actual
case
is
unintended
.
Secondly
, the
paper
presents
a
training
manual
developed
by this
author
designed
to
create
awareness
among
school
counselors
,
psychologists
,
social
workers
,
nurses
and
administrators
.
It
can
be
used
to
train
any
person
who
works
with
adolescents
engaging
in
self-injurious
behaviors
. The
manual
was
developed
based
on the
need
for
better
professional
development
for
support
services
who
will
most
likely
encounter
this
behavior
.
It
is
broken
up
into
different
lessons
that
can
be
taught
individually
or as a
whole
program
. The
manual
includes
lessons
on:
1
. The
