Abstract
This
study
investigates
the
value
ascribed
to the
counseling
position
in
small
New
England
community
colleges
. A
sample
of
eleven
community
colleges
throughout
New
England
with
current
enrollment
of
2,000
students
or
less
was
contacted
. This
survey
tested
the
hypothesis
that the
position
of
counselor
is
vital
to the
everyday
success
of these
institutions
. A
researcher-designed
survey
was
used
to
collect
information
that
addressed
the
role
and
importance
of the
position
of
counselor
in these
schools
.
Ten
of the
eleven
of the
institutions
surveyed
,
all
of
which
are
accredited
by the
New
England
Association
of
Schools
and
Colleges
Commission
(NEASC)
,
responded
. The
results
showed
,
through
the
overwhelmingly
positive
responses
to the
position
of
counselor
, that the
hypothesis
was
supported
.
Responses
from this
survey
showed
there
is
a
genuine
need
for this
position
and the
services
that
accompanies
it
. The
administrators
'
replies
explained
the
variety
of
responsibilities
and
duties
that
counselors
provide
. The
study
makes
a
case
for the
inclusion
of
counselors
on the
staff
of
small
community
colleges
.
