Title
Socioeconomic
Differentiation
in the
Hartford
Capitol
Region
:
Is
it
increasing
?
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2005
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Urban
residential
structure
has been
shown
to be
differentiated
by
three
main
factors
:
socioeconomic
status
,
family
status
and
ethnic
status
.
Additionally
,
socioeconomic
inequality
in
urban
areas
has been
shown
to
increase
over
time
. These
conclusions
are
drawn
from
quantitative
studies
of
urban
residential
differentiation
.
While
most
studies
of this
nature
occurred
from
1950
to
1980
, there are
some
recent
studies
that have
shown
both
statements
to
still
be
valid
.
Recent
studies
also
tend
to
focus
on
analyzing
change
over
time
, a
method
that
is
easier
to
perform
now
due
to
computer
assisted
analysis
.
It
is
the
belief
of this
researcher
that
socioeconomic
inequality
is
increasing
in the
Hartford
Capitol
Region
.
Anectdotal
statistics
on
poverty
and
income
over
time
support
this
theory
. To
test
the
hypothesis
, a
factorial
ecology
was
performed
for the
region
.
Census
tract
data
for the
29
municipalities
of the
Hartford
Capitol
Region
was
analyzed
for
1990
and
2000
to
determine
the
main
factors
responsible
for
residential
differentiation
. A
principal
component
analysis
was
performed
on the
29
variables
to
extract
hybrid
variables
known
as
factors
. These
factors
represent
the
underlying
characteristics
of
residential
differentiation
. The
analysis
returned
the
same
four
main
factors
for
1990
and
2000
:
Urbanization
,
Socioeconomic
Status
,
Youth
and
Women
in
Labor
Force
. The
principal
component
analysis
also
returned
factor
scores
for
each
census
tract
. These
scores
indicated
the
level
of
association
or
disassociation
a
particular
tract
has with
each
factor
. These
scores
were
linked
to
census
tracts
using
a
geographic
information
system
(GIS)
. This
allowed
for
analyzing
spatial
patterns
of the
factors
and the
change
between
1990
and
2000
. This
analysis
led
to the
conclusion
that the
spatial
patterns
of the
factors
describing
residential
differentiation
did
not
show
much
change
between
1990
and
2000
.
While
the
spatial
patterns
of the
factors
were
similar
for
each
year
, the
percent
variance
accounted
for by the
Socioeconomic
Status
factor
increased
from
17.8
percent
to
24.2
percent
.
It
was the
only
factor
to
show
and
increase
in this
statistic
. This
indicates
that
social
inequality
is
describing
more
of the
residential
differentiation
in
2000
than in
1990
. The
concept
of '
continuity
and
change,
'
highlighted
in
other
factorial
ecologies
analyzing
change
,
is
evident
in the
Hartford
Capitol
Region
. The
factors
describing
the
overall
residential
structure
are the
same
for
both
years
, but their
relative
importance
has
shown
a
significant
change
.
Future
research
on the
residential
structure
of the
Hartford
Capitol
Region
should
track
social
indicators
to
determine
if
social
inequality
is
continuing
to
increase
.
