Title
Music
and
mathematics--is
there a
connection
? : the
effects
of
participation
in
music
programs
on
academic
achievement
in
mathematics
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2008
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
With
so
much
emphasis
on
standardized
test
scores
,
teachers
and
administrators
are
under
pressure
to
find
ways
to
best
prepare
their
students
to
succeed
on
state
tests
. A
belief
exists
that
children
who
are
involved
in
music
instruction
have
higher
scores
on
state
tests
and
higher
grades
especially
in the
area
of
mathematics
.
Extensive
research
has been
done
on the
connections
between
mathematics
and
music
; they
both
require
the
learning
of
sequencing
,
repeating
patterns
and
ratios
.
Does
this
theory
hold
true
for
most
students
,
is
there a
gender
difference
for
students
who
play
an
instrument
?
Is
there a
connection
between
the
length
of
time
a
student
puts
into
music
or
instrument
lessons
and
do
these
students
perform
better
on
visual-spatial
tasks
? The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
put
this
theory
to the
test
and
conduct
research
in this
area
. If in
fact
, the
research
indicates
that
music
instruction
has a
positive
effect
on
test
performance
, the
implications
for
instruction
may
lead
to the
adoption
of
alternate
methods
to
increase
test
scores
through
music
programs
. This
research
study
was
completed
by
collecting
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
(CMT)
mathematics
scores
of
sixth
graders
along
with
whether
or not
each
student
either
plays
an
instrument
both
in and
outside
of
school
.
All
students
were
asked
to
complete
an
informal
survey
and were
given
a
set
of
visual-spatial
tasks
to
complete
. The
results
of
both
the
survey
and the
visual-spatial
activity
were
analyzed
to
determine
whether
there
is
a
difference
between
the
instrument
players
and
non-instrument
players
.
