Notes
This
study
was
designed
to
identify
relationships
between
the
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
and
sport
orientations
among
NCAA
Division
I
student-athletes
on
soccer
teams
.
Differences
among
the
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
were
examined
based
upon
their
gender
,
field
position
(forwards
,
midfielders
,
defenders
, and
goalkeepers)
, and
rank
(starter
or
reserve)
. The
Sport
Orientation
Questionnaire
(SOQ
;
Gill
&
Deeter
,
1988)
and the
Training
Information
Survey
(TIS
:
Poiss
,
Sullivan
,
Paup
,
&
Westerman
,
2004)
were
administered
to the
student-athletes
on
soccer
teams
(N
=
164)
. The
SOQ
(Gill
&
Deeter
,
1988)
assessed
the
sport
achievement
orientations
of
goal
,
win
or
competitiveness
and the
TIS
(Poiss
et
al
,
2004)
assessed
the
student-athletes
'
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
in the
off-season
of
soccer
competition
.
No
significant
differences
in
sport
orientation
were
found
among
the
participants
.
Males
were
slightly
more
win
oriented
than
females
which
is
consistent
with
previous
research
.
Both
males
and
females
perceived
weight
training
as an
important
part
of their
training
regime
. The
study
found
significant
relationships
that
student-athletes
who
were
goal
oriented
or
competitive
perceived
weight
raining
as
more
important
than
student-athletes
who
were
win
oriented
. The
study
also
found
that
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
were
significantly
correlated
with the
number
of
weight
training
days
and the
duration
of the
weight
raining
sessions
.
It
was
concluded
that
elite
Division
I
,
collegiate
student-athletes
on
soccer
teams
perceived
weight
training
as
important
regardless
of
gender
,
field
position
,
rank
or
sport
Perceptions
of
vii
orientation
.
Many
other
factors
may
influence
the
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
such
as the
type
of
program
implemented
,
availability
of
facilities
,
equipment
and
coaching
staff
,
country
of
origin
,
incidence
of
weight
training
injury
, and
education
.
Examining
these
factors
are
suggested
for
future
research
. In
conclusion
,
coaches
play
a
critical
role
as a
motivation
force
with their
student-athletes
.
Coaches
must
educate
the
student-athletes
on the
importance
of
weight
training
.
Coaches
need
to
make
weight
training
an
important
part
of the
off-season
training
regime
of their
players
. A
suggestion
for
future
research
is
the
examination
of the
coaches
'
perceptions
of the
importance
of
weight
training
.
