Notes
The
AIDS
pandemic
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
has
many
social
,
economic
, and
political
effects
on the
region
.
I
argue
that the
most
devastating
effect
of
AIDS
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
is
the
increase
in
orphaned
children
,
commonly
called
AIDS
orphans
. An
AIDS
orphan
is
defined
as a
child
under
the
age
of
15
years
who
has
lost
at
least
one
parent
to
AIDS
.
Other
vulnerable
children
are those
under
15
who
have a
parent
that
is
dying
of
AIDS
,
reside
in a
household
that has
taken
in
AIDS
orphans
, and those
who
are
discriminated
against
because
of a
relative's
or their
own
HIV
status
.
Current
estimates
show
that there are
over
12
million
AIDS
orphans
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
.
Moreover
, this
number
would be
significantly
higher
if
children
between
the
ages
of
15
and
18
and
non-orphaned
children
whose
parents
are
suffering
with
HIV
but have not
yet
died
of
AIDS
were
included
in the
calculation
of
statistics
.
More
children
are
going
to
become
orphans
in the
near
future
because
7.3%
of the
adult
population
is
HIV
positive
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
. This
thesis
examines
the
impacts
of
HIV/AIDS
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
on
orphans
and
other
vulnerable
children
.
AIDS
orphans
and
other
vulnerable
children
are
affected
by
poverty
,
poor
health
, and a
lack
of
access
to
many
material
and
emotional
needs
. These
children
have the
odds
stacked
against
them for a
prosperous
future
as they will
inherit
social
,
political
, and
economic
systems
that are
overburdened
. The
struggles
these
children
encounter
daily
and the
many
more
that
lay
ahead
for these
children
will
most
certainly
impede
Africa's
future
economic
and
social
development
.
Evidence
shows
that
unless
changes
are
made
in
cultural
and
sexual
behaviors
that
place
women
and
girls
at
risk
, in the
health
education
in
schools
and
communities
, and in
African
nation's
HIV/AIDS
policies
, the
situation
will
worsen
. A
review
of the
literature
on the
many
needs
of
AIDS
orphans
and
other
vulnerable
children
illustrates
the
debates
about
the
HIV/AIDS
statistics
, and the
impacts
of
HIV/AIDS
on
children's
health
,
emotional
well-being
, and
education
.
Further
, a
case
study
from the
author's
two
year
Peace
Corps
experience
as a
health
educator
in
Kenya
highlights
many
obstacles
that
could
impede
effective
AIDS
awareness
initiatives
.
International
financial
and
technical
assistance
to
sub-Saharan
Africa
, as
well
as
empowerment
of
women
to be
able
to
demand
safer
sex
practices
, will
help
spread
effective
AIDS
awareness
campaigns
and
establish
community
clinics
that
provide
counseling
programs
for
AIDS
victims
,
orphans
, and
other
vulnerable
children
.
