case
study
was
designed
to
investigate
the
relationship
between
organizational
structure
and
communication
practices
, and to
provide
a
subject
organization
with
practical
solutions
to their
communication
problems
.
Following
the
completion
of an
International
Communication
Association
(ICA)
Communication
Audit
in the
subject
organization
,
audit
results
were
analyzed
and
problematic
areas
identified
.
Several
structural
components
were
identified
as
possible
causal
variables
of
communication
gaps
.
Audit
results
found
significant
gaps
in
communication
power
,
communication
density
, and
information
flow
.
Research
was
explored
in
several
major
themes
including
hierarchical
status
and
communication
activity
,
information
flow
,
superior-subordinate
relationships
,
information
acquisition
and
decision-making
,
media
selection
and
source
identification
,
information
technology
, and
message
creation
and
delivery
.
Overall
research
findings
and
audit
results
suggest
organizational
structure
has a
tremendous
effect
on
communication
practices
and
effectiveness
. This
paper
argues
that this
impact
can
be
diminished
and/or
overcome
with the
creation
and
implementation
of an
established
communication
strategy
and
relevant
communication
resources
.
Recommendations
for the
improvement
of
communication
practices
within
the
subject
organization
complete
this
case
study
.
