Title
Investigating
the
Relation
between
Dimensions
of
Perfectionism
and
Social
Problem-Solving
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2009
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
anxiety
and
poor
self-efficacy
associated
with
maladaptive
perfectionism
impedes
the
person's
ability
to
effectively
perform
in
multiple
areas
of his or her
life
. The
current
study
suggests
that
problem-solving
is
one
of the
areas
likely
to be
adversely
affected
by
perfectionism
.
It
was
hypothesized
that
higher
self-oriented
perfectionism
would
predict
lower
impulsivity/carelessness
style
problem-solving
and
higher
avoidance
style
problem-solving
.
It
was also
hypothesized
that
higher
socially-prescribed
perfectionism
would
predict
higher
avoidance
style
problem-solving
and
higher
negative
problem
orientation
. The
hypotheses
were
examined
in a
sample
of
105
undergraduate
and
graduate
students
using
the
Multidimensional
Perfectionism
Scale
(MPS)
and the
Social
Problem-Solving
Inventory-Revised
(SPSI-R)
.
Multiple
regression
analyses
showed
that
participants
with
higher
scores
on
self-oriented
perfectionism
also
possessed
higher
scores
on
avoidance
style
problem-solving
,
while
controlling
for
anxiety
and
depression
.
However
,
self-oriented
perfectionism
did
not
predict
lower
scores
on
impulsivity/carelessness
style
problem-solving
.
Furthermore
,
higher
scores
upon
socially-prescribed
problem-solving
did
not
predict
higher
scores
upon
avoidance
style
problem-solving
or
negative
problem
orientation
style
problem-solving
.
Analyses
also
revealed
that
group
differences
were not
found
among
participants
of
differing
ethnicities
,
faiths
, or
between
male
or
female
participants
on any of the
three
outcome
variables
assessed
in the
study
.
